Yumi Wilson is an American journalist, professor, and media expert. She is an Associate Professor of Journalism at San Francisco State University and a visiting lecturer at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.[1]
Early life and education
editWilson earned her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Southern California and an M.F.A. in Creative Nonfiction from the University of San Francisco.[2] She is the daughter of a Black U.S. Army soldier and a woman from northern Japan.[2]
Career

editWilson worked as a news reporter and editor for several major publications including the San Francisco Chronicle, The Associated Press, the San Jose Mercury News, the Modesto Bee, and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.[1] During her journalism career, she covered significant events including the 1992 Los Angeles race riots and California's Proposition 209.[2]
Corporate career
editFrom 2013 to 2015, Wilson served as a corporate communications manager at LinkedIn, where she developed and led the LinkedIn for Journalists program, growing its membership from 16,000 to nearly 40,000 members.[3] She conducted training sessions internationally and specialized in profile optimization for high-profile individuals including Carly Fiorina, Oprah Winfrey, and Mario Batali.[1]
Academic career
editWilson is an Associate Professor of Journalism at San Francisco State University, where she teaches media writing and broadcasting courses.[4] She also serves as a visiting lecturer at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and has authored two textbooks on news writing in the digital era.[4]
