"Liberal Catholicism" and Modernism in the Catholic Church not identical

edit

"One year after being fired from Saint Mary's, he founded Fidelity, a traditionalist Catholic antimodernist journal that decried liberal currents in the Catholic Church." Are we sure, "Liberal Catholicism"? Liberal Catholicism is specifically about ecclesial-State political relations. "Modernism in the Catholic Church" usually means theology (especially historical criticism). FatalSubjectivities (talk) 15:35, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

The phrase liberal currents in the Catholic Church is meant to capture post-VII social liberalism in the Church in the United States. Modernism also works, though it's a bit more technical than the average reader would be able to understand. It's a bit hard to write about Jones for a general audience and capture the nuance within his traditionalism, since most readers aren't/don't have exposure to orthodox Catholicism, radtrads, or tradcaths more broadly. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 23:58, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
After thinking some more, Cafeteria Catholicism comes to mind as probably being the appropriate link for the post-Vatican II currents. Something like theological dissent in the Catholic Church would probably be best, but a recent RfD concluded that this among the working for Dissenting catholic. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 14:12, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
