Article incubator

This article is a high-level look at a broad topic comprising many subtopics which are notable topics in their own right, and could be expanded into articles. Almost all of the level 2 and 3 sections, and many of the level 4 subsections are in this category.

Take for example, the § Methodology and schools section near the top. All eight of the schools have ample reliable sources, are clearly notable topics on their own, and could easily be their own article. Several already are, like Annales school, which is a mature article concentrating on French historiography of the period, but others, although mature like Marxist historiography, offer a worldwide view, and even the long section on § Western historiography has little to say about French historiography (half a sentence), whereas there is a great deal to say about it. Other articles about French schools, like Nouvelle histoire, are primarily about French historiography, but are short stubs in need of expansion, and plenty of sources are available to do so.

Even the twenty or so level 4 subsections in this article under sections § Nation and identity, § Middle Ages, § 19th century, § World War II, § 1950s, and § 1960s are all notable topics in their own right, and could be developed as historiographical spin-off articles. So this article should be viewed as an article incubator, functioning as a parent article in WP:Summary style, containing summary sections about numerous notable topics which point the way to the development of many new articles.
