Droopnath Ramphul State College was one of the leading national colleges for girls in Mauritius. This college is known for promoting its students in academics as well as other extra-curricular activities over the years.

History

edit

This state college was built in 1975 . Under the rectorship of Mrs Arlette Bazire, the school began functioning in an old railway station near the Beau Plan roundabout. [2]

In 1980, it was named after Judge Droopnath Ramphul (born 20 February 1921). He is best remembered and honoured for his contributions to education.

In June 1995, students transferred to a new location in Souvenir, Calebasses. The school was then renamed to Queen Elizabeth College - North (QEC-North).

Following protest against the use of the name QEC-North by Queen Elizabeth College girls, the school went to its original name till 2003 when it became a Form VI College and was thereafter named Droopnath Ramphul State College.[3]

In 2005, DRSC has attained its first ever laureate for the HSC Examination done in 2004.

In June 2006, the school became a national college, and after three years, a fresh intake of Form I students with four A+ was enrolled. Students mostly come from Port Louis, the North, and the East.

In 2008, DRSC had a population of roughly 795 students, 535 of whom were from DRSC and 260 from Pamplemousses State Secondary School, who were accommodated at DRSC because their school was under construction.

In 2012, DRSC started their tradition of attaining at least one Laureate every year.

In February 2014, DRSC had attained its first Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) scholarship for the HSC Examination done in 2013 on the girls' side (alongside Collège Du Saint Esprit on the boys' side).[4]

In February 2019, DRSC had attained its first ever Laureate on the Technical side for the HSC Examination done in 2018. The rector, Mr Nowkeswar Persand himself said that he was not expecting a laureate on the Technical side, but rather on the Science and Economics side on his interview.

In June 2021, DRSC was transformed into an academy, meaning the school will now be a mixed school and will only serves Grade 10 to 13. In 21st June 2021, the first batch of around 180 students (90 boys and 90 girls) officially started their studies at DRSC. [5]

In February 2023, DRSC was the first school to have attained the Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) National Scholarship for the HSC Examination done in 2022 on the girls' side (alongside Royal College Curepipe on the boys' side). [6] Following the scholarship, on 21st June 2023, the Prize Giving Ceremony was graced by the Honourable, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth.

Unique Design

Clubs

edit

Arts & Crafts Club

edit

The club is an amalgamation of activities not only those concerning art. They tend to help for all school activities including sports day and music day and more.

"We believe that art gives us a chance to truly find ourselves according to our imagination and uniqueness. It allows students to connect with their creativity and through art, each of us is able to transform our thinking skills into incredible masterpieces."

One of the club's aims is to foster and develop an appreciation of art and the exploration of diverse aesthetics. Around April 2022, the club organised "Thrift Shop Event" where members collected old clothes and accessories from students of the school itself and converted the old attires and items into fashionable and voguish outfits. The activity not only encouraged the budding talent of students but the funds gathered was donated to a student in need.

Annual activities organised by the Club:

  • Decoration for National Independence Day
  • Mascots and others for Sports Day
  • Decoration for Prize Giving Ceremony & Music Day
  • Mural Painting
  • International Women's Day

Benevolent Club

edit

The benevolent club of DRSC has helped the entire school community and throughout the year, various activities were carried out for noble causes.

Each year, the benevolent club organises activities to raise funds, in order to help those in need.

Chess Club (New 2024)

edit

Chess Club was revived by Geet Dussoye and Geshna Dussoye, alongside with the Club Coordinator, Ms. Predita Gunput.

On the 30th May 2024, DRSC had their Fun & Food Day, and the chess club has organised a chess tournament where students and even teaching and non-teaching staffs could participate. The winner is said to win a Shield and all participants will win a certificate.

Code For DRSC (New 2024)

edit

Code for DRSC was set up by Nikhil Purlackee and Divya Taukoordoss, alongside with Club Coordinators, Ms. Burrun (Computer Science Educator), Ms. Dossieah (Computer Science Educator), and Ms. Soorjonowa (Computer Science Educator) on May 2024. This club is supported by Code for Mauritius.

"Code For DRSC is like my own child to me. Even though I co-founded it in my last year of school (my busiest year), I tried every way to make it interesting for the members, by hosting workshops and attempting to collaborate with other Technology based clubs. Honestly, this project is one of the best things that has happened to me this year. Code For DRSC single-handedly improved me in every way. It taught me how to lead a team, communicate with a big audience, grab the attention of someone, and even learn how to have fun while working on something. My only wish is that this club must continue after my departure."

-Nikhil Purlackee, President of the Club (2024)

Annual activities organised by the Club:

  • Workshops

Environment Club

edit

The concept of ‘going green’ refers to the practice of environmentally friendly lifestyles which help preserve and sustain the environment.

In 08 December 2023, DRSC has attained the Silver Award for the Eco School Programme awarded by the Vice President of the Republic.

"We aim for the green flag next year (that is 2024)…" -Mrs Predita Gunput, Biology Educator (2023)

In 2024, the club has organised a competition namely, "Upcyle Challenge: Transform Trash Into Treasure" where individuals or groups of students has to make eye catching and innovative objects using items that we normally would not use. The aim of the competition is to contribute the Eco-School Programme and make DRSC an eco-friendly school.

The Integrity is the platform to take a stand and create a lasting impact in this world.

In this club, student will find a "safe haven" where their voice are heard, valued and amplified.

"I have spent countless months into reviving the school’s Integrity Club- an idea much sought after by the Rector. I have single-handedly come up with the clubs aims and objectives as well as managed the election process. Since this was an endeavour I had undertaken in my senior year of secondary school, I’m hoping the committee is competent enough to keep the club active and ensure it becomes a thriving organization that will continue to flourish even after my departure."

-Urooj Sohawon, President of the Club (2023)

Message from Rector (2024)

edit

Greetings and a warm welcome to all. As school is resuming and our work life at school is starting. I sincerely hope you are embracing it with renewed enthusiasm and vigour after the summer holidays.

DRSC is now 49 years old and has lived up to its reputation over the years. I wish to thank each and every staff member who had as his/her motto a committed work culture. To those joining the school this year, I wish you a warm welcome and trust you will soon integrate and adapt the DRSC community. Your collaboration is quintessential on this new journey of 2024 and beyond. Our school with its adolescent student population calls for attentive, caring and devoted educators and staff to lead us on the path of success and growth.

"Alone we can do little, together we can do so much" -Helen Keller

A lot has been said about the synergistic potential of unity, be it a group, a family or an organisation. Accordingly, when the school vision and mission is understood and becomes the aligned guiding principle of each and every one, there is no barrier to success.

I hereby wish that together we create a disciplined culture, a climate and ethic that are conductive for the sound development of young learners. It is the third intake for the school as an Academy with a co-educational student population. It is definitely a different set up, with multifarious challenges and the need for innovative strategies.

You are called upon to play various roles as grade master, club coordinator, committee member, guide, etc although the crux of all remains being an educator. It is a huge responsibility as we are empowered to shape and mould the future of our young learners and consequently that of the future society and nation. Let us do full justice to this task.

Let us together promote academic achievement and holistic prowess among our students. With a long and rewarding history of achievement and excellence in education behind us, our school community continues to move forward together with confidence, pride and enthusiasm.

Renewed commitment on your part coupled with enthusiasm and drive of being a good teacher and staff member will surely impact positively on the school and student community. Strive not to allow routine drudgery to get at you and your precious calling. The one to bring the greater positive impact on your job is YOU.

"When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us become better too." -Paulo Coelho

Wishing you all the best.

Mrs M. SOOKHAREE
