Gillies made her career debut in theater in 2008 when she was cast in the Broadway musical 13 alongside Ariana Grande, with whom she would later co-star in the TV series Victorious.[1] During her time on Victorious, Gillies was featured in several songs on the soundtracks Victorious and Victorious 2.0.[2] After Victorious ended in 2013, Gillies recorded Winx Club's official song, "We Are Believix".[3] Gillies was also signed to the record label Columbia Records; after the deal with Columbia lapsed, she only released songs in conjunction with her acting roles.[4] These included roles on the TV series Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (for which she performed several original songs[5]) and Dynasty.[4] Some of these songs were co-produced with her boyfriend and later husband, the composer and musician Michael Corcoran.[4]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gillies and Seth MacFarlane collaborated on a series of songs, eight in total, on an extended playlist entitled Songs from Home.[6] In 2023, Gillies and MacFarlane collaborated again and released their Christmas album, We Wish You the Merriest.[7][8]
