Plot
editSusana Trejos, a responsible doctor devoted to her patients, is about to marry Andrés del Valle, a lawyer with a shady past who carries on a secret affair with Ivonne, a hypocrite who claims to be Susana's best friend. However, Andrés' sister Paloma is the only one aware of the betrayal by both Andrés and his lover, yet sadly no one believes her. Susana is deeply in love with Andrés, but he only wants to marry her to kill her and inherit her fortune. Mere hours before her church wedding, Susana receives a message that Andrés is in the Lacandon Jungle, gravely ill and near death.
True to her nature, Susana decides to fly by helicopter to save her beloved, only to discover that the sick man isn’t her fiancé but an archaeologist with the same name. While processing her confusion in the jungle, lawyer Andrés sets Susana’s apartment in Mexico City on fire, intending to kill her. Tragically, one of Susana’s friends is in the apartment and perishes in the fire, her remains unrecognizable and leaving everyone to assume it was Susana who died. Meanwhile, archaeologist Andrés receives Susana's medical care; she eventually decides to return home but finds herself stranded without transport or communication. As time passes, a romance blossoms between her and the archaeologist, even as betrayals and murders surround them, with a local woman, Mayán, plotting against Susana to win over the archaeologist for herself.
Eventually, Susana and the archaeologist return to Mexico City. She reveals herself to some family members, but keeps her survival hidden from lawyer Andrés, so she can initiate a divorce after discovering his affair with Ivonne and his takeover of her assets. Ivonne, suspicious of her lover Andrés, secretly records a tape exposing his crimes, including the fire. Later, both Andrés and Ivonne are in a vehicular accident and are treated by Susana, revealing to both of them that she’s alive. Ivonne, dying from her injuries, succumbs before revealing to Susana the full truth about the fire.
Mayán, now known as Cynthia, reappears as a refined woman married to a wealthy rancher named Mariano in Sonora. She teams up with lawyer Andrés, seducing him as they carry out a plot to kill Mariano. Now a widow, Cynthia agrees to run away with lawyer Andrés, but he still wants to kill Susana to prevent her from reclaiming her fortune. Cynthia also wants revenge on Susana and archaeologist Andrés, using a sleeping potion to take staged photos with him to hurt Susana. Heartbroken, Susana decides to end her relationship with the archaeologist. Cynthia, however, meets her end at the hands of her former jungle lover, Bor, who has tracked her down. Lawyer Andrés is arrested but later escapes with his lawyer’s help, ultimately killing his lawyer as "payment" for his aid.
Seeking a fresh start, Susana travels to Guatemala to give a symposium and leave her past behind. Both the archaeologist and lawyer Andrés follow her, the latter intent on killing them both. Lawyer Andrés finds Susana at the Tikal ruins and is about to strike when archaeologist Andrés arrives to protect her. In a final struggle, lawyer Andrés falls to his death from atop a pyramid. Susana and the archaeologist, having reconciled, seal their love by marrying atop the Tikal pyramid, surrounded by her mother Aída and grandmother.
