The ELA consists of seven parties around the movement Now the People (NTP) formed in 2018. Their members tend to be newer, green-left leaning parties, and lament the dominance of traditional communist parties after the election outcome and the exit of three parties from the EL (Bloco de Esquerda from Portugal, Vasemmistoliitto from Finland and La France Insoumise from France).[4][5]

History

Foundation

edit

The first officially confirmed member of the ELA was the Danish Red-Green Alliance, Enhedslisten.[4] European parties like ELA and EL can receive EU funding. The existing EL received 1,900,000 in 2024. The parties are separate from the groups in the European Parliament. Both EL and ELA belong to the parliamentary group The Left in the European Parliament – GUE/NGL.[6][7]

Some Die Linke subdivisions submitted a motion to express its loyalty towards PEL claiming that the "fragmentation of the European left at a time of the rise of the extreme right is a mistake."[8]

Members

ELA has 18 of 46 MEPs who compose the Left group in the European Parliament.[9]
