Summary

Description
English: Ames Monument, Old Sherman, Wyoming This impressive monument, which stands sixty-five feet high, was built for a pair of brothers who were instrumental in the construction of the Union Pacific. Oliver Ames served as the President of the railroad while Oakes Ames was a Congressman from Massachusetts and a real prime mover of the endeavor. Together they staked their considerable wealth on the building of the road. Oakes would later be censured for selling Union Pacific shares of Credit Mobilier, at a deep discount, to his congressional friends. The town of Sherman, by the way, was named for William Tecumseh, and is the highest point on the entire route between Omaha and Sacramento. (image 9-15_1)
