English: The [Singapore] Straits Times newspaper wrote in its edition of 17 June 1952: Penang adopts a flag badge | Penang, Mon[day]. The Settlement Council today [16 June 1952] adopted Penang's crest as the flag badge of the Settlement. The crest shows “an arecanut or pinang tree leaved and fructed proper on a mound with a wreath of the colors of the settlement arms.” Adoption of this as Penang official flag badge was moved by the Settlement Secretary, Mr. GC Dodwell, and seconded by the Legal Adviser, Mr. CM Sheridan.
