English: This photo, taken on December 7, 2009, looks northwesterly at the empty casemate of Battery Gardner, Gun 1. The opening of the gun position has been banked with earth to try and stop visitors from entering the casemate.
The tower at left rear is a WW2-era fire control tower with three observation levels. The top one of these was the Battery Commander's position for Btty Gardner, the next middle one one was a base end/spottig station for Btty McCook on Peddocks Island and Btty Whipple on Lovells Island, and the lowest one was an observation post for the Northern Group of the Boston Harbor defenses. The tower was built with an attached frame house that housed observation crew members. Today, that house has been remodeled as a private residence and is still attached to the tower, which is also privately owned.
