Svenska: FIGUR, på fotställ av brons. Sittande, vänd framåt med leende ansikte och öppen mun, veck i pannan, öron med förlängda snibbar (tecken på visdom), rakat huvud, starkt utsvälld buk. Iklädd långärmad fotsid rutig rock, öppen över bröst och buk. Glasyren gulaktig, svagt iriserande, glansig, prickig och ojämn. Fotställ av europeisk tillverkning, gjutet, förgyllt, med sammanhängande rokokobågar med bladornament. Figuren fastsatt vid stället medelst harts.Inköpt av Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, 27 maj 1908, hos konsthandlare J. Bosshard, Luzern, Schweiz.Figure. Porcelain figure of Budai decorated in overglaze enamels and with added European ormolu stand Qing dynasty, c.1720-30.Budai literally means “cloth sack” and here the Buddha is shown grasping a sack that contains his meagre worldly possessions. He is wearing patchwork rags of many colours, stitched together in a diamond pattern. In spite of his poverty, this manifestation of the Buddha was supremely contented and is always shown smiling or laughing. The image was extremely popular in East Asia, where a fat stomach was seen as a feature of well-being. |
