English: When coastal traders arrived with high-value goods to barter, the local Safwa and Nyakyusa people used the word "Ibheya" or "Mbeya", which in their local dialects translates directly to "Salt." Because salt was a highly prized commodity used to balance trades in this mountain transit camp, the entire valley settlement eventually adopted the name.
