English: Richard Whittington (c. 1354–1423), Lord Mayor of London. 19th century engraving by William Luson Thomas (1830–1900) of an engraving circa 1590 by Reginald Elstrack. Welsh Portrait Collection at the National Library of Wales. Top left: Arms of Whittington; bottom left: arms of the Worshipful Company of Mercers; top, two small shields displaying the merchant mark of Richard Whittington; bottom left: arms of Merchant Adventurers Company of London: Barry nebulée of six argent and azure, a chief quarterly gules and or on the first and fourth quarters a lion passant guardant of the fourth on the second and third two roses gules barbed vert. Inscription: Vera effigies preclar(i) Domini Richardi Whitington Equi(ti) Aurat(i) ("True likeness of the famous Sir Richard Whittington, Knight Bachelor". Many authoritative biographers of his omit any mention of a knighthood. Huius sparsa viri totu benefactu per ... monstrant indice qualis erat (ungrammatical transcription), signifying "All the benefactions of this sparse man show what sort of (man) he was". Original engraving depicted a skull, changed to a cat by printseller Peter Stent to meet popular expectations.
