The Greater Western Sydney Giants Wacky Wednesday scandal was a sports controversy that occurred following the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season.
Background
editFollowing the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season, which saw the Greater Western Sydney Giants exit the finals series with consecutive losses to eventual grand finalists Sydney and the Brisbane Lions, a players-only end-of-season function was held in a hotel in Wooloomooloo on Wednesday 18 September.[1]
It emerged that players used inappropriate costumes, among them captain Toby Greene dressing as Australian break-dancing Olympian Rachael Gunn, and others dressing as former National Rugby League player Jarryd Hayne, basketballer Josh Giddey, and the Twin Towers, a reference to the September 11 attacks. A number of skits were also carried out, though Greene was said to have "not directly involved" in them.[2][contentious label]
Outcomes
editThe following fines and suspensions were announced by AFL CEO, Andrew Dillon:[3]
- Captain Toby Greene was fined $5,000 for his lack of leadership;
- Josh Fahey was suspended for four matches;
- five players – Jake Riccardi, Joe Fonti, Toby McMullin, Harvey Thomas and Cooper Hamilton – were each suspended for two matches;
- in addition to Greene, five players – Sam Taylor, Lachie Whitfield, Connor Idun, Lachlan Keeffe and Harry Perryman – were each fined $5,000.
