The Heat diner scene is a scene from the 1995 film Heat, which was written and directed by Michael Mann.[1][2][3] The scene features the characters of Lt. Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley, played by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro respectively.[2][3][4][5] The scene is notable for marking the first time Pacino and De Niro shared screen time together, which they never did in their first film collaboration, The Godfather Part II (1974).[4][6][7][8] The scene lasts six minutes and 17 seconds.[7]

Production

edit

The scene was shot in the now-defunct restaurant, Kate Mantilini at around 1AM Pacific Time the night it was shot.[5][6][7][9] According to Mann, the scene in the final cut was mostly shot from its 11th take.[2][10] Both Pacino and De Niro have revealed that they never rehearsed the scene prior to it being shot.[11] It was De Niro's idea not to rehearse.[11][12]

Legacy

edit

Mann has debunked the rumor that Pacino and De Niro were not present together when the scene was shot.[13][14]

Richard Thompson of MovieWeb noted how the film Heat inspired Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008), comparing the diner scene with the interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker.[15]

The scene has been parodied in Bupkis (2023).[16]
