DEFAULTSORT for persons with double surname
Christina Hoff Sommers is defaultsorted by "Sommers, Cristina Hoff", but in citations, I see her references rendered as "Hoff Sommers, Christina" . So, what would be the correct defaulsort key? Staszek Lem (talk) 18:26, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
- I changed defaultsort to "Hoff Sommers, Christina", but still would like to have a second opinion.Staszek Lem (talk) 20:37, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Staszek Lem: The principal question is, is Hoff a given name or the first word of an unhyphenated two-word surname? As an example of the former case, consider David Ogden Stiers, who sorts as

; for the latter case, consider Helena Bonham Carter, who sorts as
. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:18, 27 March 2018 (UTC)- Sorry I did forget to mention that Hoff is a surname as well. Staszek Lem (talk) 16:30, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
- In fact, I found a detailed advise in Wikipedia:Categorization_of_people#Ordering_names_in_a_category. I don't understand how I missed this in the first reading. Staszek Lem (talk) 16:36, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Temporary maintenance holdings cat
This category is popping up a lot recently on articles, I had a question about it on my userspace talk page, I asked another admin, we have no idea why it's popping up on articles. Is there something wrong with the cat? Is it broken? I couldn't work out how to remove it was on Dean Austin, or other pages. Can anyone explain whats going on? Cheers. Govvy (talk) 13:08, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- Category:Temporary maintenance holdings
- It's from Template:Tooltip, but has now been removed from that template redirect.
- More discussion at WP:Village pump (technical)/Archive 164#Temporary maintenance holdings.

Centuries
There is an article Joan Bodger that has categories like "20th-century Canadian women writers" and "20th-century American women writers". Can I include the categories like "21st-century American women writers" because Bodger died in 2002? Kraose (talk) 09:35, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- You'll probably get better responses (more of them, and better quality) by asking this on either Talk:Joan Bodger or on the talk page for a pertinent Wikiproject (i.e. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women writers or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Literature; or, failing that, on Wikipedia:Village pump. This is a page for discussing improvements to the Help:Category documentation page.
- That being said, according to the article, she has no works published in the twenty-first century, her last work being published in 2000, the last year of the twentieth century; so I would say she does not meet the requirements to be a twenty-first century writer. TJRC (talk) 20:57, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for resolving the issue. I will post on WikiProjects next time. Kraose (talk) 08:14, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
Creating New Categories
How is a new category created? The Help page is not clear on this subject. The closest the article comes to stating how a new category is created is the following sentence.
- They are implemented by a MediaWiki feature that adds any page with a text like in its wikimarkup to the automated listing that is the category with name XYZ.
So is the process automatic, and the new category will automatically appear after X period of time that the category is placed into an article (appearing as a red link for X period of time)?
I'm asking because I am working on the Spanish version of Wikipedia, but there does not appear to be a category similar to the English version Category:Vehicle registration plates of South America. If the process is not automatic, then how does this happen?
See the External links section (Enlaces externos) of the following Spanish articles for examples of what I am referring to above.
Since English is my primary language it is easier for me to post this question here.
Thanks! Zcarstvnz (talk) 12:49, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- I've fixed the references to categories in the above comment, but it's a redlink (i.e. there is no such category in en wp) and a quick look at Category:Road transport in South America hasn't found it. DexDor (talk) 15:01, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Zcarstvnz: Help:Category#Category page definition says: "New categories are created by creating a page in the Category namespace." The blue text is a link to Wikipedia:How to create a page. Category pages can be created in the same ways as other pages, e.g. by making a red link to the category, clicking the red link and saving something. It's possible to add pages to a categoery before the category page has been created. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:17, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help and explanation. The page has now been created. Zcarstvnz (talk) 18:37, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- Zcarstvnz, you've created es:Categoría:Placas de matrícula de vehículos de Sudamérica, but (assumining that eswp has similar rules to enwp) that category needs to be categorized in higher level categories. DexDor (talk) 20:49, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help and explanation. The page has now been created. Zcarstvnz (talk) 18:37, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Displaying Category Sortkeys in Category?
Is there a way while viewing a category to see the sortkeys which caused the ordering in a category? (and adding a tool as the solution would be fine)Naraht (talk) 15:58, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Naraht: I only know the API method we told you about at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2019 February 26#Seeing the sortkeys in a category? I have made a script to use it: User:PrimeHunter/Sortkeys.js. Install with this in your common JavaScript:
importScript('User:PrimeHunter/Sortkeys.js'); // Linkback: User:PrimeHunter/Sortkeys.js
- PrimeHunter (talk) 00:53, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter Thank You. On what pages will it show up and do I need to activate it by clicking something in the Tools?Naraht (talk) 11:01, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Naraht: The link will show up on all category pages in the desktop version of the site, assuming your browser has JavaScript enabled. You have to click the link to see the API page with the sortkeys. It gives Sort keys on Category:2019 so it's not pretty for humans. It ignores which part of the category you were looking at. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:11, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter I have Javascript turned on (other tools work including one that stops all redirects from going forward), but where will I see the link? Over on tools? Please take a look at my current common.js to make sure that I am using it right...Naraht (talk) 11:17, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter Thank you found it. Not sure why it is in the middle of my tools though.Naraht (talk) 11:34, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Suggestion for article
Just for the sake of a faster Google search: please include the literal words "vertical bar" refering to the character | used in the explanation for (for me, it was a very useful explanation for understanding why the | in categories, but I had to deduct it from context and someone else could have difficulties in finding this information about wiki coding). I don't dare to edit this article since as you guys can see it right now, my English writing is horrible. Greetings. --Mizukane203 (talk) 15:35, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Flattening a category
Is the operation of flattening a category possible? That is, I want to see all pages in a category, as well as its subcategories (with this definition recursively applied to included its subcategories as well, etc.). I use the word flatten analogously to "flattening a nested array" here.--2602:306:C531:7310:7C8C:339:8338:B872 (talk) 20:34, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, the Wikipedia:PetScan tool can do this. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:47, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Subcategories
For example on Turkey, the categories are listed on the page itself, and also to the Category/Turkey. Should we remove those in the article and leave the ones in the category, or should it stay on both? Please ping me after a reply. Beshogur (talk) 09:11, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Beshogur: I don't know what you mean by
the Category/Turkey
; but the rest should be covered by Wikipedia:Categorization. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:31, 9 May 2021 (UTC)- @Redrose64: I mean Category:Turkey. Beshogur (talk) 15:22, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Category text size
Is it just me or has Wikipedia decided to enlarge the catagory boxes everywhere? The text looks much bigger than standard text size. TheBartgry (talk) 15:47, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Dalcroze eurhythmics - category of Talk page doesn't match category of Article page
Hi I'd like to fix a discrepancy between a talk page Talk:Dalcroze eurhythmics and its associated article page Dalcroze eurhythmics . The article page is in the Music Education category while the Talk page is in some dance categories. I think it would be good to conform the Talk page to the Article page category. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks
Edinburghpotsdam (talk) 18:09, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Edinburghpotsdam: No, talk page categories are independent of article categories, and for the most part, are different. On the talk page there are three categories: Category:Start-Class Dance articles Category:Unknown-importance Dance articles Category:WikiProject Dance articles these are all produced by the
WikiProject Dance
banner at the top. Banners like that must not be used in articles. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:09, 14 July 2021 (UTC)- @Redrose64: Thank you! I will try to improve my understanding of why it would work that way. Edinburghpotsdam (talk) 00:42, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Section wording – Putting pages into categories
The section Help:Category#Putting pages into categories begins A page belongs to a category if the page's wiki markup contains a declaration for that category.
Seems awkward and cart before the horse.
Many editors link to this section when reverting improper edits to category pages. It should read as if to a new editor, who wants to categorize a page, but does not know how. Just a suggestion: If a page belongs to a category, then the declaration for that category should be placed at the bottom of its page.
The current wording isn't even necessarily true. Anyone, including the person you are reverting, could have added (incorrectly) the category declaration. Doesn't mean the page actually belongs. --DB1729 (talk) 20:53, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Request for comment on category namespace
Should we make the pseudo-namespace CAT: become an alias to the category namespace like in Commons? Vitaium (talk) 14:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Vitaium: This is the wrong place to make such a proposal, it is the talk page for discussing improvements to the page Help:Category. You should really discuss this at WP:VPR; and to begin with, stick to discussion - don't make it a formal RfC unless that is what others agree to. See WP:RFCBEFORE. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:41, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
