History and Geography (film)

History and Geography (Spanish: Historia y geografía) is a 2023 Chilean comedy film co-written, co-produced and directed by Bernardo Quesney.[1] Starring Amparo Noguera accompanied by Catalina Saavedra, Pablo Schwarz, Paloma Moreno, Paulina Urrutia and Steevens Benjamin.[2] It is about a remembered comedy television actress who decides to return to her hometown to put on a play with the purpose of recovering the artistic recognition that she thought she had lost, but never had.[3]

Synopsis

Gioconda Martínez is a remembered television comic actress who decides to return to her native San Felipe to put on a play based on La Araucana and, in the process, bury her past as "La huachita", a character that gave her great television popularity in full civil-military dictatorship.[4][5]

Principal photography was scheduled to begin on April 4, 2020,[6] but was delayed until December of the same year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7] It was filmed primarily in San Felipe, Chile.[8]

The film had its world premiere on August 24, 2023, at the 19th Santiago International Film Festival,[9] then screened on November 8, 2023, at the 9th La Serena International Film Festival,[10] on January 22, 2024, at the 16th Chilean Film Festival,[11] on April 24, 2024, at the 25th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema[12] and on August 10, 2024, at the 28th Lima Film Festival.[13] It had its commercial premiere on April 18, 2024, in Chilean theaters.[14]
