The song was co-written and produced with longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner, with additional contributions from Audrey Hoberts. The title bears a resemblance to Abrams' earlier well-known track, "I Miss You, I'm Sorry", released on April 8, 2020.

Commercial performance

Despite not being released as a single, "I Love You, I'm Sorry" has achieved significant success. In North America, it debuted at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending August 17, 2024, marking Abrams' fifth entry to the chart, following "Everywhere, Everything", "Close to You", "Risk", and "Us". The next week, it rose to its current peak position of 67.[1] In Canada, the song reached number 47 on the Canadian Hot 100 for the week ending September 14, 2024.[2] "I Love You, I'm Sorry" peaked at number 21 on the UK Singles Chart.[3] Elsewhere, the song charted in the top 50 in several countries, including New Zealand,[4] Australia,[5] and Ireland.[6]

The song debuted at number 141 on the Billboard Global 200 chart for the week of August 17, 2024, and later climbed to its peak position of 59 on the week ending September 14, 2024.[7]
