Hašek played as a central midfielder, and spent 11 years of his career with Sparta Prague, appearing in more than 300 official games with the club, and later acting as its manager. Hašek represented Czechoslovakia at the 1990 World Cup, and was also president of the Football Association of the Czech Republic.
As a manager, he worked with clubs in the Middle East in the mid-2010s, before being appointed as coach of Lebanon in 2021. He returned to Czech Republic to be the national team coach in 2024.
Playing career
editBorn in Městec Králové, Hašek started his football career at ZOM Nymburk until he was 14 years old.[1] Transferring to AC Sparta Prague, Hašek was named Footballer of the Year as the club won five league titles.[2] He also played aboard in RC Strasbourg, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, and JEF United Ichihara. With the French club, Hašek played two seasons in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.[citation needed] In his last days as a player, he spent at first-team of Sparta Prague and teamed up with his cousin, Martin.[citation needed]
Hašek played for Czechoslovakia, gaining 55 appearances and scored five goals. He was a participant in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where the national side reached the quarterfinals, with him as team captain; in the group stage 5–1 routing of the United States, he scored the third.[3][4] After the match, Hašek said: "We are sorry for the score".[4]
Coaching career
editEarly coaching career
editHaving been coach since 1999, Hašek managed former clubs Sparta Prague and Strasbourg, as well as Vissel Kobe, Al Wasl FC and AS Saint-Étienne.[5] He became coach of Dubai-based Al-Ahli in December 2007. [6]
Hašek became president of the Czech Football Association in June 2009.[7] However, on 7 July, he became head coach national team as head coach until the end of the 2010 World Cup qualification.[8] Hašek announced his resignation as coach of the Czech Republic national team on 14 October 2009[9] and FA president on 26 June 2011 to return Dubai-based club Al-Ahli.[10]
In July 2014, Hašek succeeded a long-time coach Sebastião Lazaroni as the new coach of Qatar SC ahead of the 2014–15 season.[11]
Lebanon and return to the Czech Republic
editOn 15 July 2021, Hašek was appointed head coach of the Lebanon national team,[9] on a one-year contract.[12] Having finished bottom of their group, thus failing to qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup, Hašek decided not to renew his contract.[13]
On 4 January 2024, Hašek was again appointed head coach of the Czech Republic national football team.[14]
Personal life
editHašek is also a lawyer.[15] His two sons, Pavel and Ivan, are also professional footballers.[16]
