History

edit

Founded in August 2020 by Jonny Liss and Chad Smith, in creative partnership with Catherine Todd and Collin Ferguson from Where y’Art Works, JAMNOLA officially opened in November 2020 under the parent company IJAM LLC.[4][5][6][7] The museum features interactive art installations created by over 30 local artists, celebrating New Orleans vibrant culture.[8][9][8][10]

Located in a 5,400 square-foot space on the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) Institute campus in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans,[4][9][11] JAMNOLA faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to modifications for touchless exhibits.[12] Upon reopening, the museum implemented health protocols including social distancing, capacity limits, temperature checks, and mask requirements.[13]

During COVID, JAMNOLA launched an online store offering an "It's About New Orleans" charity t-shirt, with proceeds supporting Feed The Second Line, an organization that aids New Orleans culture-bearers, including musicians, artists, and Mardi Gras Indians.[14][15][11]

JAMNOLA has been described in publications as "an artistic love letter to New Orleans",[9] “a photographable and instagrammable journey”,[12] “a colorful oasis”[16] and as a "12-room maze of artistic wonderment".[4]

Growth and expansion

edit

On April 7, 2021, NOLA.com reported that JAMNOLA 2.0 will be introduced in a 13,000 square foot space at 940 Frenchmen Street in the Binder Bakery building.[17][18] The project, estimated to cost $5 million, is scheduled to open in 2025.[17]
