The Jernas-S, stylised as JERNAS-S, is a compact medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle developed in the United Arab Emirates by ADASI, an autonomous-systems company under the Emirati defence and advanced-technology conglomerate EDGE Group. It is designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, tactical intelligence, target acquisition, electronic-warfare support and precision ground-attack missions.[1][2]

The aircraft has a published maximum take-off weight of 630 kg (1,390 lb), an empty weight of 320 kg (710 lb), an 8 m (26 ft) wingspan and a maximum mission payload of 155 kg (342 lb). It is powered by a turbocharged piston engine driving a three-bladed pusher propeller.[1]

EDGE publishes a maximum speed of 240 km/h (150 mph), a cruising speed of 220 km/h (140 mph), an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance endurance of up to 15 hours and an endurance of up to 10 hours with the maximum payload. The aircraft has a stated maximum operating altitude of 24,000 ft (7,300 m) and a line-of-sight control range of 200 km (120 mi).[1][3]

The Jernas-S was publicly presented under its current name during the Dubai Airshow in November 2025. European Defence Review reported that the aircraft had previously been announced under another name and was approaching the end of development, with production planned during 2026.[2]

EDGE managing director and chief executive Hamad Al Marar identified Jernas-S in January 2026 as the successor to the earlier Reach-S unmanned aircraft. EDGE continued to offer Reach-S but positioned Jernas-S as a more compact and cost-effective alternative with a greater payload, higher cruise speed and higher operating ceiling.[3]

Development

Earlier Jeer presentation

At the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi in February 2025, EDGE publicly displayed a medium-altitude long-endurance aircraft named Jeer.[4]

The Jeer prototype had the same general mission category later assigned to Jernas-S, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and ground-attack missions. It used a canard aerodynamic layout, a rear-mounted piston engine, a three-bladed pusher propeller, winglets, tricycle landing gear and an electro-optical sensor turret beneath the forward fuselage.[4]

The aircraft displayed at IDEX carried two Desert Sting 16 guided munitions beneath its wings. Additional attachment points indicated provision for a larger number of external stores.[4]

Janes assessed the displayed aircraft as having:

  • a four-cylinder turbocharged piston engine;
  • engine output within the 100 to 120 hp (75 to 89 kW) class;
  • a three-bladed pusher propeller;
  • a canard configuration;
  • swept, high-aspect-ratio wings;
  • winglets with control surfaces;
  • a dorsal engine-air intake;
  • fixed tricycle landing gear; and
  • a ventral multi-sensor electro-optical turret.[4]

In later coverage of Jernas-S, European Defence Review stated that the aircraft had previously been announced under a different name.[2]

Replacement of Reach-S

EDGE announced at the Dubai Airshow in November 2023 that the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence had ordered 100 Reach-S unmanned aircraft.

During IDEX 2025, EDGE chairman Faisal Al Bannai told Janes that the company instead intended to deliver the newer Jeer aircraft to the UAE Armed Forces on the original programme timeline.[5]

Al Bannai described the aircraft as being in the same general category and performance envelope as Reach-S but at a lower acquisition price. He stated that deliveries were expected to begin near the end of 2025.[5]

In January 2026, EDGE chief executive Hamad Al Marar identified Jernas-S as the successor to Reach-S.[3] Al Marar stated that Reach-S remained commercially available while Jernas-S had become EDGE's more economical offer for this aircraft class.

According to figures provided by EDGE and reported by Janes, Jernas-S has:

  • a maximum take-off weight of 630 kg (1,390 lb), compared with 640 kg (1,410 lb) for Reach-S;
  • a mission payload of 155 kg (342 lb), compared with 120 kg (260 lb);
  • an operating ceiling of 24,000 ft (7,300 m), compared with 22,000 ft (6,700 m);
  • a cruising speed of 220 km/h (140 mph), compared with 150 km/h (93 mph); and
  • endurance of 15 hours, compared with 24 hours for Reach-S.[3]

Al Marar stated that the acquisition cost of Jernas-S was approximately 20 per cent of that of Reach-S.[3]

Dubai Airshow 2025

Jernas-S was presented under its current name during the Dubai Airshow held from 17 to 21 November 2025.

The aircraft was displayed alongside the larger Jernas-M, which was developed using design and flight-control experience gained from Jernas-S.[2]

The displayed Jernas-S incorporated:

  • an 8 m (26 ft) wingspan;
  • forward canard control surfaces;
  • a high-mounted main wing;
  • winglets;
  • a rear-mounted piston engine;
  • a three-bladed pusher propeller;
  • tricycle landing gear;
  • an electro-optical sensor turret beneath the forward fuselage; and
  • external weapon stations beneath the wings.[2]

ADASI described the aircraft as being near the end of its development programme and stated that production was planned to begin during 2026.[2]

Publicly released information did not identify:

  • the date of the first flight;
  • number of development aircraft;
  • accumulated flight-test hours;
  • completion date for development;
  • production quantity;
  • delivery schedule; or
  • military unit intended to operate the aircraft.

Design

Airframe

Jernas-S is a single-engine, fixed-wing unmanned aircraft with a canard aerodynamic configuration.

The aircraft has small control surfaces positioned forward of the main wing. The high-mounted main wing incorporates upward-pointing winglets.

The aircraft's published wingspan is 8 m (26 ft).[1]

The rear fuselage contains the engine and propeller assembly. The pusher arrangement leaves the forward fuselage available for avionics, communications equipment and mission sensors.

An electro-optical sensor turret is positioned beneath the forward fuselage, providing a downward and lateral field of view.

The aircraft uses fixed tricycle landing gear and is designed to operate from conventional runways.[2]

EDGE publishes:

  • empty weight of 320 kg (710 lb);
  • maximum take-off weight of 630 kg (1,390 lb);
  • maximum mission payload of 155 kg (342 lb); and
  • wingspan of 8 m (26 ft).[1][6]

The aircraft's overall length, height, wing area and maximum landing weight have not been published.

Canard configuration

Jernas-S uses forward canard surfaces instead of a conventional horizontal tailplane mounted behind the main wing.

The configuration places the engine and pusher propeller at the rear of the fuselage while retaining separate forward pitch-control surfaces.

The larger Jernas-M uses a similar external arrangement. ADASI stated that the aerodynamic similarity between the two aircraft reduced the differences required in their flight-control systems.[2]

Wing and control surfaces

The aircraft has a high-aspect-ratio main wing with winglets.

The wings contain external attachment points for mission equipment and guided weapons. The Jeer prototype displayed in February 2025 carried one weapon beneath each wing, while the current Jernas-S configuration is advertised with up to four guided munitions.[4][1]

Public information does not specify:

  • wing area;
  • aspect ratio;
  • flap arrangement;
  • structural load limits;
  • maximum manoeuvring load;
  • maximum crosswind limit; or
  • stall speed.

Landing gear

Jernas-S uses fixed tricycle landing gear consisting of a forward wheel and two main landing-gear assemblies.

The aircraft conducts conventional runway take-off and landing. It is not a vertical-take-off-and-landing system.

Published take-off distance, landing distance and runway-surface requirements have not been released.

Propulsion

Jernas-S is powered by a Zongshen CA520TI piston engine.[1]

EDGE describes the engine as:

  • four-stroke;
  • four-cylinder;
  • turbocharged;
  • rated at 115 hp (86 kW) at 5,800 revolutions per minute; and
  • compatible with 95-octane automotive gasoline.[1][6]

The engine is mounted in the rear fuselage and drives a three-bladed pusher propeller.

The aircraft has a published fuel capacity of 250 L (66 US gal) and a stated fuel-consumption rate of approximately 13.5 L/h (3.6 gal/h).[1]

Public information does not identify:

  • propeller manufacturer;
  • propeller diameter;
  • reduction-drive arrangement;
  • engine service interval;
  • fuel-tank layout; or
  • maximum continuous engine output.

Flight performance

EDGE publishes a maximum speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) and a cruising speed of 220 km/h (140 mph).[1]

The aircraft has two principal endurance figures:

  • up to 15 hours in an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance configuration; and
  • up to 10 hours while carrying its maximum mission payload.[1][2]

The surveillance configuration described by European Defence Review carried primarily an electro-optical sensor turret. Additional sensors or weapons increase aircraft mass and reduce endurance.[2]

The maximum published operating altitude is 24,000 ft (7,300 m).[1]

The published line-of-sight command-and-control range is 200 km (120 mi).[1][3]

The 200 km (120 mi) figure refers to line-of-sight communications range rather than the total distance the aircraft can travel during a 15-hour flight.

No public figures have been released for:

  • maximum flight distance;
  • climb rate;
  • take-off distance;
  • landing distance;
  • stall speed; or
  • maximum wind tolerance.

Mission systems

Electro-optical and infrared sensors

Jernas-S can carry an electro-optical and infrared sensor turret beneath the forward fuselage.[2]

Depending on the installed equipment, an electro-optical turret can support:

  • daylight observation;
  • thermal imaging;
  • target detection;
  • target tracking;
  • reconnaissance;
  • coordinate generation;
  • laser ranging;
  • laser designation; and
  • battle-damage assessment.

The precise sensor manufacturer and model selected for Jernas-S have not been publicly identified.

Radar payloads

EDGE lists radar as an available mission-payload category.[1]

Radar payloads may be used for:

  • wide-area surveillance;
  • ground mapping;
  • moving-target detection;
  • maritime observation; and
  • surveillance in reduced visibility.

No specific radar model has been publicly confirmed for Jernas-S.

Electronic-warfare payloads

Jernas-S can also carry electronic-warfare equipment.[1]

Potential functions include:

  • detection of radio-frequency emissions;
  • electronic-support measures;
  • signals collection;
  • emitter-location support; and
  • communications-intelligence missions.

The specific equipment, antennas and frequency coverage have not been publicly disclosed.

Multi-mission configuration

The aircraft's 155 kg (342 lb) mission-payload capacity allows different combinations of sensors, communications equipment and guided weapons.

Published mission configurations include:

  • electro-optical surveillance;
  • radar surveillance;
  • electronic-warfare support;
  • tactical target acquisition;
  • precision ground attack; and
  • combined sensor-and-weapon missions.[1]

The endurance of each configuration depends on payload mass, aerodynamic drag, electrical demand and fuel load.

Communications and control

Jernas-S uses a line-of-sight command-and-control link with a published range of up to 200 km (120 mi).[3]

The data link can transmit:

  • aircraft-control commands;
  • flight and navigation information;
  • engine and system status;
  • electro-optical imagery;
  • radar information;
  • electronic-warfare data;
  • target coordinates; and
  • mission updates.

Public sources have not identified:

  • communication frequencies;
  • encryption system;
  • data-transfer capacity;
  • resistance to electronic interference;
  • satellite-communications capability;
  • number of aircraft controllable from one station; or
  • ground-control-station configuration.

The aircraft performs automated flight functions, but the precise division of control between onboard systems and ground operators has not been described publicly.

Armament

EDGE advertises Jernas-S with up to four lightweight guided munitions.[1]

Published armament configurations consist of:

  • four Desert Sting 16 guided munitions; or
  • four Rash-2 guided munitions.[1][6]

The official Jernas-S page abbreviates Desert Sting 16 as DS-16.

Desert Sting 16

Desert Sting 16 is a lightweight precision-guided munition developed by HALCON under EDGE Group.

The Jeer prototype displayed at IDEX 2025 carried two Desert Sting 16 weapons, one beneath each wing.[4]

The current Jernas-S configuration is advertised as carrying four Desert Sting 16 munitions.[1]

Rash-2

Rash-2 is a lightweight precision-guided weapon marketed by ADASI.

EDGE lists four Rash-2 weapons as an alternative Jernas-S armament configuration.[1]

Public material does not confirm a mixed Desert Sting and Rash load on the same aircraft.

Weapon employment

The electro-optical sensor turret can support target observation, tracking, coordinate generation and guidance for precision engagements.

The weapons are carried externally beneath the wings.

Public sources have not disclosed:

  • completed weapon-release-test dates;
  • maximum release altitude;
  • maximum release speed;
  • target-designation procedures;
  • weapon engagement range;
  • weapon qualification date; or
  • production-standard weapons load.

Relationship with Reach-S

Jernas-S is the designated successor to Reach-S within EDGE's unmanned-aircraft portfolio.[3]

EDGE continued to offer Reach-S commercially while positioning Jernas-S as its more economical successor.[3]

Jernas-S has a smaller wingspan, greater mission payload, higher cruising speed and higher published operating ceiling. Reach-S retains a longer published endurance.

Relationship with Jernas-M

Jernas-M is an enlarged aircraft developed using experience acquired from Jernas-S.[2]

Both aircraft use:

  • canard control surfaces;
  • main wings with winglets;
  • rear-mounted piston engines;
  • pusher propellers;
  • tricycle landing gear;
  • electro-optical sensor positions beneath the forward fuselage; and
  • external underwing weapon stations.

The larger aircraft required scaled-up brakes, landing gear, control actuators, propulsion and fuel capacity.[2]

Intended roles

Jernas-S is intended for missions including:

  • intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance;
  • tactical reconnaissance;
  • target acquisition;
  • persistent observation;
  • border surveillance;
  • radar surveillance;
  • electronic-warfare support;
  • precision ground attack;
  • battle-damage assessment; and
  • communications or sensor relay.[1]

Its compact wingspan and conventional runway configuration are intended to support deployment from established airfields while providing greater payload capacity than smaller tactical unmanned aircraft.

Procurement and operational status

EDGE announced in February 2025 that the aircraft then presented as Jeer would replace Reach-S in the UAE Armed Forces procurement programme.[5]

Deliveries were announced as being planned from the end of 2025. EDGE later identified Jernas-S as the successor to Reach-S in January 2026.[3]

ADASI stated in November 2025 that production of Jernas-S was planned to begin during 2026.[2]

As of July 2026, publicly available sources had not identified:

  • a confirmed production quantity under the Jernas-S name;
  • an announced delivery total;
  • an operational squadron;
  • an initial operational capability date; or
  • an export customer.
