Photography and Filmmaking

edit

Jamie Morgan is the iconic British photographer who gained recognition for his work with the groundbreaking Buffalo Collective. Morgan co-founded Buffalo along with legendary stylist Ray Petri, Buffalo was a group of like-minded creatives whose images are said to have changed the nature of modern fashion photography. The collective had a major exhibition at the V&A museum, accompanied by the release of the heavily referenced ‘Buffalo’ book.

“Buffalo and Morgan was the most successful and influential image creators of their generation… Defining the look of an entire era…Buffalo tested the limits of fashion imagery using models of all races and mixing couture with street at a time when it was unheard of, hence a new style was born and still dominates to this day.” - Dazed

Jamie's work can be characterised as contemporary portraiture. Inspired by classicism yet utterly modern in his choice of casting, cultural comment and fashion interpretation each image is a graphic statement which, although modern in feel, are also timeless. There are many general themes running throughout the work, yet each image has its own narrative. Jamie’s images often play with the mixing of gender and race, of street and high fashion, of young and old. The imagery is simultaneously romantic and aspirational while remaining edgy and street-credible, defining an image style - this is what gives these images their iconic status.

“Morgan’s work is as much about character as it is fashion, about attitude and values that are timeless and universal beyond trends…yet his work is fearlessly modern and trend setting” – The Observer.

Jamie naturally progressed into filmmaking and has shot many celebrated music videos and fashion films. He has also directed three feature length documentaries and has won an award at Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival. He has always been involved in music having released two solo albums and co-writing Neneh Cherry’s number one hit “Buffalo Stance”. His passion for music has informed his film work and has always been an integral part of his film narratives.

Jamie continues to work as a top photographer and filmmaker, shooting for high-end fashion magazines like Arena homme+, Dazed, I-D magazine, British Vogue and CR fashion book whilst creating commercial photography for brands including: Givenchy, Martine Rose, Alexander Wang, Timberland, Nike, John Varvatos, Shoreditch Ski Club, Tommy Hilfiger & Ozwald Boateng etc.

Music career

edit

Morgan formed half of the duo Morgan-McVey[4] who released just one single, 1986's Stock Aitken Waterman-produced "Looking Good Diving" b/w "Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch".[5] Originally conceived as a Simon & Garfunkel-style male vocal duo who would harmonise over reggae beats, early demos failed to deliver on the concept. Facing creative inertia, the act's record company convinced them to work with rising pop producers Stock Aitken Waterman, a proposition that left them with mixed feelings.[5] Morgan says "Looking Good Diving" co-vocalist Cameron McVey was so "embarrassed" by the resulting record and video, the band disintegrated.[5]

However, the single's B-side, which Morgan co-wrote, would soon evolve into Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance", which reached number three in the UK Singles Chart and the top 10 around the world in 1988. Morgan says he helped facilitate the track's transformation into a hit, after accidentally meeting its remixer, DJ Tim Simenon, while attempting to evade a stalker who was trying to kill him.[5]

As a solo artist under the name Jamie J. Morgan, he released a cover of the Lou Reed song "Walk on the Wild Side" in 1990, which reached the top 30 in the UK and Australia, and number one in New Zealand.[6] An album, Shotgun, was also released in 1990.
