Plot
editThe film opens as we see a blossoming love affair. Rahul falls in love with Neha, whom he meets in college. However, when his mother discovers who Neha's parents are, things get complicated as Rahul and Neha find out that they may in fact be siblings. When Rahul's parents oppose their wedding, Rahul insists on finding the real reason, and thinks it is because of Neha's family who has a lower social & financial status than his own family . When his parents explain that Neha's mother has played as much an important part in building their toy factory's image to where it is today and helped them in expanding their business, and he is her biological son.
Rahul gets very upset after discovering that Neha is his real sister, and disgusted at the mere thought of this incestuous relationship.
In the background they also show the full story of how Rahul is part of Urmila's family. But as the flashback continues, we find out that this is not at all true. Akansha and her husband had a son of their own - also named Rahul. When he suffered critical issued due to a Brain Tumour, Urmila and her husband fully supported Akansha financially for Rahul's medical condition and their household finances, God blessed Urmila with a child but she was too weak to bear him, so Akansha agreed to become surrogate mother to Urmila's baby and carry it. But during this time, Rahul who was under medical treatment, died in hospital. Akansha was devastated but vowed to name this new child Rahul in memory of her son. But then the common problem of Surrogacy crept in, that because the surrogate mother will always consider the new born as her biological child, this is precisely what happened in Akansha's case. And because it was a boy, and she called him Rahul, she began to feel that she is the rightful mother of the newborn. Although Urmila understood her friend's situation, she knew that this was her child and not Akansha's. Further issues arose and after the initial nurturing, Akansha refused to give baby Rahul to Urmila. Both Urmila and Akansha wanted Rahul and Urmila's husband begged Akansha for the custody of Rahul. Finally, as Akansha saw that this child yearning was taking a heavy toll on Urmila's health, she gladly gave baby Rahul to Urmila forever. When Neha talks to Rahul's biological mother she discovers that she was also adopted by Rahul's real mother and they are indeed not brother and sister, but it is too late, since Rahul has shot himself when they both rush to their home and he becomes injured, they both explain that Neha is not Rahul's real sister, and Rahul also survives and they show after a year they are happily married and they have their own son, and this way it is happy ending for every one and all the family members celebrate good moments and the movie ends with a song of Rahul and Neha in the rain and water.

Reception
editTaran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 1 star out of 5, writing ″Chander Behl's direction has its limitations due to a half-convincing script. Dialogues too seem straight out of yesteryear films. Musically [Nirmal Pawar], a mediocre score. JANANI has two powerful performances in the form of Bhagyashree and Mohnish Bahl. Both seasoned actors, they infuse life in their roles with solid portrayals. Ayesha Julka goes overboard at times. Aman Verma is passable. Vineet and Sonica are able in their debut film. On the whole, JANANI has nothing to lure the family audiences, its target audience. At the box-office, this one's a non-starter!″[2]
