John Francis Lhotka Jr (1921–1993) was an American medical doctor who was a professor of anatomical sciences at the University of Oklahoma. He was a member and supporter of numerous learned societies, and a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Sigma.[1][2][3]
Career
editLhotka earned his BA in anatomy at the University of Montana, and his MS in anatomy, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in Sciences at Northwestern University, and was licensed to practise medicine in Oklahoma, Illinois and Montana. He worked at the Minneapolis General Hospital (1950–51), then taught at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where he was professor, and subsequently professor emeritus. He published scientific papers on histochemistry, many of which were supported by national grants.
Military service
editFor his military service in World War II, Lhotka received the following recognition:
- U.S.: American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Asiatic and Pacific Campaign Victory Medals
- Foreign: Yugoslavia's War Cross (Royal); Médaille de la France libérée (France); Médaille Commemorative Belge (Belgium); Canada's (Alberta) Royal Lifesaving Medal (Benefactor), Jubilee Medal (1985).
Membership and support of learned societies
editLhotka was a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Sigma, and a member and supporter of over 30 learned societies, including the Petroleum Club.
He received the following awards and honours:
- The Royal Numismatic Society (honorary member from 1985)
- Donat 1st Class, Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem
- Order of the Augustan Eagle
- Newell Award (American Numismatic Association)
- Medal of Merit (American Numismatic Association)
He founded the following awards to recognise achievement of others:
- The Michael Louis Backowske Memorial Award in Anatomical Sciences, OUHSC,
- The Michael Louis Backowske Library Fund (American Numismatic Society),
- The John and Mary Lhotka Library Fund (American Numismatic Society)
- The Lhotka Memorial Literary Prize (Royal Numismatic Society)
