John Proctor is the Villain is a stage play written by American playwright Kimberly Belflower. The play is a revisionist take on the American classic play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, centering on a group of modern day students and their interpretation of the historical events the play is based on. Belflower received permission to use excerpts from The Crucible from Arthur Miller's estate.[1]

Production history
editThe play was first workshopped in 2018 at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky by the schools theatre department, directed by Jennifer Goff.[2] The play was first produced by the Studio Theatre in Washington D.C in 2022, running from April 27 until June 5, directed by Marti Lyons.[3]
The play won Best Ensemble and Outstanding Production of a Play at the Helen Hayes Awards.[4]
In 2024, a production was staged at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston, running from February 8 until Marth 10, directed by Margot Bordelon.[5]
Broadway
editThe play has been announced to premiere on Broadway in 2025, directed by Danya Taymor and starring Sadie Sink. Previews are scheduled to begin March 10, 2025 with an opening date of April 14, 2025 at the Booth Theatre.[6]
