Jory Bell is a General Partner at Playground Global, an early-stage venture capital firm based in Palo Alto, California.[1][2][3] He joined the firm in 2015 as vice president and has since been involved in a number of investments in deep tech areas such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, genomics, and synthetic/computational biology.[1][4]

Early life and education

He grew up in Rochester, New York, and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned three undergraduate degrees in architecture, literature, and earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences.[3][5][4] After graduation, he worked as a researcher with the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute climate change program, designing, building, and deploying autonomous deep-sea robotics.[3][4]

Career

Bell spent six years at Apple as a product designer before founding OQO in 2000, a company credited by the Guinness World Records as having created the world’s smallest Windows PC.[6][7][8] He then joined Playground Global, where he has played a part in investments in companies like Nervana Systems (acquired by Intel), Velo3D (which went public in October 2021), and Relativity Space.[3][4] He currently leads Playground’s engineered biology investing practice with investments in companies including: Ultima Genomics, Strand Therapeutics and Manifold Bio.[3][4][9]
