Josiah Schakel (born January 19, 1999) is a Canadian professional football linebacker for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played U Sports football at Alberta. He has also been a member of the Calgary Stampeders.

Early life
editSchakel played high school football at Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park, Alberta.[1]
University career
editSchakel played U Sports football at Alberta. He won the Presidents' Trophy in 2021 as the top U Sports defensive player.[2][3]
Professional career
editCalgary Stampeders
editSchakel was selected by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in the second round, with the 14th overall pick, of the 2022 CFL Draft.[4][5] He signed with the team on May 9, 2022. He was placed on injured reserve several times during the 2022 season.[6] Overall, Schakel dressed in seven games in 2022, and made one tackle on defense.[7][8] He was released on June 3, 2023.[9]
Edmonton Elks
editSchakel was signed to the practice roster of the Edmonton Elks of the CFL on June 26, 2023. He was moved to the active roster on June 28, 2023.[10] He dressed for 15 games in 2023, recording 14 special teams tackles.[8][7] Schakel re-signed with the team on December 1, 2023.[11][12]
