Kaya Chakrabortty (Japanese: チャクラボルティ雅, Hepburn: Chakuraboruti Kaya, (born August 6, 2001)) is a Japanese beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Japan 2024. She will represent Japan at the Miss Universe 2024 competition to be held in Mexico.[1]

Early life and education
editKaya Chakrabortty was born in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, to a Japanese mother and a Bangladeshi father. She is fluent in multiple languages, including Japanese, English, Spanish, and Korean.[2] She attended Michigan State University, where she graduated in 2024 with a double degree in Human Biology and Neuroscience and a minor in Japanese. During her high school years, she was a competitive figure skater, winning the U.S. high school national championship twice[3].
Career
editIn 2024, Kaya Chakrabortty was crowned Miss Universe Japan, becoming the first biracial winner with Bangladeshi heritage. The selection event was held on July 25, 2024, at Yamano Hall in Tokyo. As part of her victory, she expressed a desire to showcase the importance of health education and the evolving cultural landscape of Japan on the world stage[4][5]
Volunteer work and advocacy
editKaya Chakrabortty is known for her extensive volunteer work, including emergency rescue and shelter cooking. She is a certified EMT and has been active in various humanitarian efforts for approximately 15 year She advocates for children's health and language education, currently teaching English to Japanese students in Japan, aiming to inspire and empower the younger generation.[6]
Personal life
editChakrabortty enjoys a variety of cultural activities and has a deep interest in the arts, particularly traditional Japanese performances such as Japanese archery and playing the koto. She attributes her interest in cross-cultural activities to her diverse background and upbringing. She has managed figure skating shows and assisted in costume designing[7][unreliable source?].

editKaya has a diverse range of professional experiences. She has worked as a medical scribe, assisting healthcare providers with documentation and administrative tasks. As a research fellow at the Detroit Medical Center, she focused on studies related to anesthesia and multilingual publications. Kaya has also worked as a private figure skating coach and volunteered as a dinner prep volunteer at Haven House.[8]
