History

edit

Kefshenne (today called Kayalı) was historically inhabited by Syriac Orthodox Assyrians.[4] In 1914, the village was inhabited by 200 Assyrians in 25–30 families and had an Assyrian landlord, Hano Basuski.[7] It was located in the kaza of Jazirat Ibn ʿUmar.[8] Amidst the Sayfo, the Assyrians fled with all their property to Azakh after having been warned by their Muslim neighbours to flee for their own safety.[9] They returned to Kefshenne after the war but later emigrated to Mosul in Iraq.[9]
