History
editThe city of Bremerhaven, which commissioned the construction, also received funding from the federal government and the EU. The owner of the climate house is the municipal Bremerhaven development company Alter/Neuer Hafen (BEAN). The municipal housing company Stäwog was commissioned to manage the project of building. The costs were initially estimated at 70 million euros including the exhibition. It ultimately cost a good 100 million euros.[1]
In 2000 the construction of the building close to the Old Harbour began. The Klimahaus was originally scheduled to open in summer 2007. Since the city of Bremerhaven had to re-tender the construction work in the meantime, completion was delayed. The Bremerhaven Klimahaus was opened on June 25, 2009, by the Irish musician and human rights activist Bob Geldof.
CEO of Klimahaus from 2009 to 2023 was Arne Dunker.[2] A new exhibition on extreme weather was decided in 2023. BEAN advertised who would continue to run the museum as the operating company. In July 2023 it became puplic, that Klaus Meier, a Bremen billionair will operate the Klimahaus in the future. Klaus Mayer brought in a lot of money and Arne Dunker's company lost. Bremerhaven city council (Magistrat) chose Meier out of three applications to run the museum.[3] Ingrid Hayen became CEO of Klimahaus.[4][5]
Exhibition
editThe exhibition is a virtual journey around the Earth in a north–south direction. It is carried out at approximately the longitude of the starting point, 8°34′30″ east of Greenwich, and in an extension over the South Pole in a north direction along the 171st. to 172 degrees west longitude.
In addition to the climate with its different characteristics, the exhibition also presents the living conditions of people in different regions of the world. At each travel stop, a separate story is told and the effects of climate change are shown for this place.[6]
The permanent exhibition of the Klimahaus was rated positively by many visitors, but there is also criticism of the concept. A critice is, that the information comes at the expense of entertainment. The 143 exhibition rooms and the more than a hundred “participatory stations” take a lot of time and sometimes distract the focus from the topic.[7]
At the opening, Ilka Kreutzträger noted that the Klimahaus had the "typical experience museum problem" as a "mixture of tourist fun and a scientific information center". The museum “does not live solely on the good idea alone,” she wrote.[7]
Building
editThe construction of the climate house began in April 2000 and was so complex that around 20 architectural offices, special engineers' offices and structural engineers were required. Around 100 companies from the individual trades were involved in the construction itself. The site covers a total building area of 15,000 square meters.[1]
