Early life

edit

Lee discovered her passion for acting while watching the female lead in the drama "Palace." She joined a theater club at Seomun Girls' High School [ko] and enjoyed acting in various assignments and on-site filming projects.[1][2]

Career

edit

After graduating high school, Lee pursued acting by auditioning for small roles. In 2017, despite initially failing an audition, she eventually starred in director Hur Jin-ho's short film Two Lights: Relumino after a recommendation from someone she met during the audition process.[1]

In 2019, Lee landed a lead role in Won Ji-ho's short film The Tale of Mari and Yimae, which was selected for the Best Student Fantasy Short Film category at the IndieX Film Festival in Los Angeles, USA in May 2020. In 2021, the film was selected as a finalist for the Korean Short Film Competition at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. In the film, Lee played Mari, a character who experiences oppression from her father. Lee's performance in this role demonstrated her exceptional ability to convey a wide range of emotions, showcasing her talent as an actress and earning her critical acclaim.[3][4][5]

Choi Myung-gyu noticed Lee after seeing her on the independent film poster and subsequently signed her to an exclusive contract with his agency, Studio Santa Claus Entertainment.[6] In February 2021, she was promoted as a rookie actress under the agency.[7]

In March 2021, Lee was cast in her first lead role in the drama Artificial City directed by Jeon Chang-geun.[8] In June of that same year Lee was confirmed as cast of Season 4 of Crime Drama Voice.[9] The fourth season was premiered on June 18, 2021, and it aired on every Friday and Saturday until July 31, 2021. This marked Lee's television debut. She was praised for her acting performance in the series.[10][11]

In December 2021, Lee appeared in Artificial City, a mystery psychological thriller set in the art museum of the Sungjin Group, a prominent player in the Korean political and financial world.[12][13] The series also stars Soo Ae, Kim Mi-sook, Kim Kang-woo and Lee Hak-joo.[14] The drama premiered on JTBC on December 8, 2021, and aired every Wednesday and Thursday.[15] Lee received positive feedback for her performance in the series, showcasing her ability to portray the character's complex emotions with a mature and captivating acting style.[16][17]

Following a reorganization at Studio Santa Claus Entertainment,[18] Lee transferred to Ghost Studio [ko], an artist agency established by Choi Myung-gyu in 2022.[19][20]

Lee rose to fame with her role as "4-1" in the Netflix original series Black Knight (2023), where she showcased her talent in action sequences involving hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and wire work. Her portrayal of a delivery driver fighting for social equality stood out for her agile and determined movements. She also brought a unique presence to her role as the loyal right-hand woman to '5-8', the leader of the Black Knights, and as a mentor to the refugee character April.[21]

In 2023, Lee appeared in the Netflix original series Daily Dose of Sunshine, starring Park Bo-young, Yeon Woo-jin, Jang Dong-yoon and Lee Jung-eun. Directed by Lee Jae-kyoo, the series is based on the Kakao webtoon of the same Korean title by Lee Ra-ha, a former nurse.[22][23] It was released on Netflix on November 3, 2023.[24][25] Lee played the supporting role of Min Deul-re, a nurse in the Department of Psychiatry at Myungshin University Hospital. She was praised for her acting.[26][27] Her performance in the series earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards.[28]

In June 2024, it was reported that Lee has landed the lead role in the new Netflix series Can This Love Be Translated? Lee plays the role of the talented producer Shin Ji-seon. The series is a romantic comedy that follows the story of multilingual interpreter Ju Ho-Jin (Kim Seon-ho) who becomes the interpreter for global top star Cha Mu-hee (Go Youn-jung).
