Biography

edit

Li Zhaodong was born in Shantou, Guangdong in a family of calligraphers and painters.[1] His father, Li Yongzhi, taught him character structure and brushwork at a young age. Li, along with Fang Chuxiong and Zhuang Xiaojian, was hailed as a "child prodigy".[2][5][6]

In 1965, Li studied under the calligrapher and painter Dian Jiemei, who gave him a painting inscribed with the phrase "A weak bone of nature is not hindered by age". Dian Jiemei praised him saying “As a young man, he has inherited the style of the Tang dynasty, which is rarely seen after Wang Duo".[7] Li also received instruction from Zheng Fuxuan, Wang Lanruo, and Liu Changchao, and learned the Shanghai School's flower and bird painting, which mainly features plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum.[8]

In 1973, Li Zhaodong shifted his focus from flower and bird painting to landscape painting while continuing to sketch from nature. He studied under Lin Fengsu and Liang Liusheng and copied numerous original works by Liang Liusheng and Hu Peiheng, as well as landscape sketch albums by Mei Qing, Shi Tao, and others.[9]

In 1980s, Li Zhaodong moved to Shenzhen, where he interacted with various calligraphers and painters across China. During this period, he was exposed to the works of Huang Binhong, whose style had an influence on him. Li Zhaodong developed his personal artistic approach by integrating "learning from nature" with "using calligraphy to paint", a style he refined through practice and observation of natural landscapes.[7]

In 1996, Li held his first solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China.

Li was interviewed by China Central Television and featured in the Pearl River Film Studio documentary Little Calligrapher - Li Zhaodong.[8]
