The Margraviate of Meissen was a territorial state on the border of the Holy Roman Empire. The margravines of Meissen were the consorts of the margraves of Meissen.

The Division of Altenburg on September 26, 1445 attempted to divide the Saxon lands between Frederick IV's two sons Frederick VI and William III. But when Frederick VI chose the western part (Thuringia) instead of Meissen, William III rejected his choice and the Saxon Fratricidal War started.
