The 510-foot (160 m) long earthen dam was owned by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and impounded a 0.83-acre (0.34 ha) pond. It was in severe disrepair and was breached to remove maintenance and liability concerns, as well as for stream restoration.[ 3]
