The following is a list of confirmed video games with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer characters, including any others falling under the LGBTQ umbrella term. The numbers in this list are possibly higher due to fact that some characters remained unconfirmed, unsourced or controversial.
History
During the 1980s, characters that can be argued as identifying as LGBTQ+ were rarely shown in a realistic or non-stereotypical context and were often the objects of ridicule or jokes.[1]
In the 1990s, games (often Japanese ones) continued to use stereotypical LGBT characters which did not reflect the diversity in LGBT communities. However, more efforts were found to make more diverse and less one-dimensional characters.[2]
In 2018, GamesRadar's Sam Greer found 179 games with any LGBT representation.[3] Of those 179 games, only 83 have queer characters who are playable characters. And of those, only eight feature a main character who is explicitly pre-written as queer as opposed to them being queer as a character creation option.
In 2024, GLAAD found that under 2% of digitally-distributed games for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles were noted by their respective companies as having LGBT content, and under 2.5% of Steam games were tagged as LGBT.[4]

Tenko Chabashira | Lesbian | In the character's official English profile, it is stated that compliments from women will "make her heart aflutter", whereas the same compliments from men will result in them "getting thrown across the room".[120]
Kokichi Oma | Pansexual or bisexual | Kokichi tends to display romantic dialogues with many different characters in both canonical and bonus modes, showing no gender differences as he does so. He seems to have fun calling Miu Iruma sexual names, and had more or less joked about having a crush on Himiko Yumeno in Chapters 2 and 5. He expresses romantic interest towards Shuichi, claiming his objective during their Free Time events was to "steal [his] heart".[121] When Shuichi leaves the Neo World Program after refusing Kokichi's attempts to cooperate, Kokichi mutters to himself that he won't give up, because he found "someone he came to like". During the pair's Love Suite event, Shuichi himself notes that he's not a different person in Kokichi's ideal lover fantasy.[122] Kokichi has also shown interest in Kaede Akamatsu, often flirting with her and claiming he thought "they were of one heart and soul".[123] He says he "really cares about" Kaede and states that "he was thinking about her the whole time". He offers Kaede to join his criminal organization, as he apparently wishes to "rule the world and set it on fire with her".[124] After witnessing her death, he called her his "beloved Kaede".

A number of interactions in game hint at her being transgender, with the game's director, Harvey Smith, later confirming it on stream after players picked up on the clues.[125]
2017 | Dishonored: Death of the Outsider | Billie Lurk / Meagan Foster | Bisexual | Billie first appears in the DLC for the original Dishonored before appearing as Meagan in the sequel, and finally being the player character in Death of the Outsider. That must be why I come here after school... sometimes I find a couple alone here. They might be leaning against one another, or embracing... I never gave it a second thought before, but lately... It pains me to see them... I have probably come to realize that this is a sort of connection I can never attain... I am not a male... I'm not even human...! The closer my heart become to that of a human, the more I realize how much sets us apart...! Just because my heart is developing doesn't mean I can actually become human... I have known this from the beginning, of course. But... only recently have I realized something. I have another wish, one just as precious as my desire to live... My realization is that this second wish can never be granted..." / Narrator: Aigis seems very distressed... / Aigis: "...I'm sorry. I lost control of myself again... But this feeling that you are precious to me will never change... No matter what happens..." / Narrator: Aigis is gazing at you intensely... / Aigis: "No... that's not right. Until now, I have always referred to you as something precious to me. But that is not the correct way to express this feeling. However... If I were to use the proper words... I know it would never come true, and I...!" / Narrator: Aigis ran off... You decide to go back to the dorm.
- ^ Atlus (November 1, 2009). Persona 3 Portable (PlayStation Portable). Scene: Level 9 Aeon Social Link [if the protagonist is male]. Aigis: “[Protagonist]-san... I.. I love you…” / Narrator: Aigis looks embarrassed… / Aigis: “I know that I'm a machine. I know... that I can't be touched. But I don't know why...! All I can see or think about is you, [Protagonist]-san... I feel like I'm going to break down somehow... [Protagonist]-san...” / Narrator: You sense Aigis' strong affection towards you... You gently hugged Aigis as she trembled… / Aigis: “.....!! Narrator: She shook you off... / Aigis: “.....I-I'm sorry. I can't... think of anything to say... I wonder if something really has broken inside of me... I feel… so happy..... Umm... W-We should go back...... I-I'll go ahead. I... I can't look at you now. Um... S-See you later...” / Narrator: You decide to go back to the dorm separately.

I want to be closer to you than anyone else. I don't want you to love someone else... I don't want that, even if it's what would make you happy! I know that I'm a machine. I know... that I can't be touched. I know that you should find happiness with a man...! But, but... I don't know why...! All I can see or think about is you, [Protagonist]-san... I feel like I'm going to break down... [Protagonist]-san...” / Narrator: You sense Aigis' strong affection towards you... You gently hold Aigis' shaking hand... It is surprisingly warm... / Aigis: “.....!! .....” / Narrator: She shook your hand off... / Aigis: “.....I-I'm sorry. I can't... think of anything to say... I wonder if something really has broken inside of me... I feel hot, like something is burning inside me........ Umm... W-We should go back...... I-I'll go ahead. I... I can't look at you now. Um... - ^ a b Atlus (November 1, 2009). Persona 3 Portable (PlayStation Portable). Scene: Level 10 Aeon Social Link. Aigis: “[Protagonist]-san... I, um.. actually have one more favor to ask... At the base of my neck, behind the knot of the ribbon... My most important component is located there. The source of the artificial psyche that makes me who I am... My emotional engine... the "Papillon Heart". It's extremely delicate, so I am forbidden to expose it outside of the laboratory's clean room... I... want you to touch it. If exposed to your skin oils and cells, your genetic information will most likely be burnt into it. Even so... I want you to do this. I want to leave indelible proof in this body of the understanding that you and I have reached... Not as a memory that can be erased, but as something permanent... Something irrevocable.” / Narrator: Aigis is gazing at you intently... [If the player chooses “Nod silently”] Aigis: “Thank you very much. I'm overflowing with joy... Please... come closer. Oh, umm...Since you'll be coming into direct contact with my heart, I... I apologize in advance if I say something odd, or make unusual noises... As a precaution, I will cut off motor functions to my arms and legs.” / Narrator: Aigis seems embarrassed... / Aigis: “Well then, umm... Will you... untie my ribbon?” / Narrator: You spent a long time with Aigis. If you held onto it for me, I......I think I'll be able to stand it.” / Narrator: You received Faint Glow Ring from Ryoji. You feel a strong, solid bond with Ryoji... You have forged a bond that cannot be broken! / Ryoji: “I love you... We should go back. The others will be worried, I'm sure...”
