Overview

edit

The family owned company was founded by J.G. Shields in 1927. Longcliffe Quarries is based in Brassington, Derbyshire.[3][4][5]

Longcliffe Quarries operates multiple quarries in Derbyshire, with their Brassington Moor Quarry being the primary site for limestone extraction.[6] The company supplies over 1.5 million tonnes of limestone and dolomite products annually from its reserves.[7] The company employs 190 people across its two sites, it is one of the Derbyshire Dales' largest employers.

Products produced by the company include high purity limestone powder and granules as well as aggregates, speciality limes, and agricultural lime.[8][9][10][11][12][13] The company is a major supplier to the animal feeds and agricultural/industrial sectors.

Sustainability

edit

The company has implemented multiple sustainability measures. Since the 2014/15 fiscal year, the company has reduced on-site energy intensity by nearly 20%. The installation of two wind turbines at Brassington Moor Quarry has resulted in a reduction of nearly 70% in net emissions.[14]

In May 2021, the company introduced a wet processing plant to enhance product yield and recycle process water.[15][16][17]

In April 2024, Longcliffe invested in two new 14-tonne horizontal mills to increase production capacity and further support sustainability efforts.[18][19][20][21]

Community Engagement

edit

Longcliffe Quarries owns two ex-worked quarries, Peak and Hoe Grange. The company collaborates with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Butterfly Conservation East Midlands to manage these sites with a focus on biodiversity.[22]

The Longcliffe Community Fund allocates over £70,000 annually to various local projects, including educational activities.[23]

Governance

edit

Established in 1927, Longcliffe Quarries is still owned by the Shields family. The current company chairman, Robert Shields, is the great-grandson of the company's founder. John Shields, another family member, sits on the board and serves as the company’s Energy Director, leading its sustainability initiatives.[24]
