Makena is a census-designated place (CDP) in the extreme southwest of the island of Maui in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 196,[2] up from 99 in 2010.[3] Prior to 2010, the area was part of the Wailea-Makena census-designated place.

Makena is located on the south side of the island of Maui at 20°39′14″N 156°26′25″W / 20.65389°N 156.44028°W / 20.65389; -156.44028 (20.6539, -156.4403).[4] It is bordered to the north by Wailea and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. Road access is only available from the north, by Makena Road.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.5 square miles (29.9 km2), of which 9.5 square miles (24.5 km2) are land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2), or 17.93%, are water.[1]
