Maria Rodriguez Denton

Maria Rodriguez Denton was the first woman of Puerto Rican descent who became an officer in the United States Navy Reserve as a member of the WAVES.[1][2][3]

The Navy assigned lieutenant junior grade Denton as a library assistant at the Cable and Censorship Office in New York City. It was she who forwarded the news (through channels) to President Harry S. Truman that the war had ended.[1]

In 2022 LTJG Maria Rodriguez Denton was posthumously inducted to the Puerto Rico Veterans Hall of Fame.[4]
