Syrjä is one of Eppu Normaali's founding members. The band's guitarist, Mikko "Pantse" Syrjä, is Martti's brother, and drummer Aku Syrjä is the brothers' cousin. Mikko and Martti's parents are Kirsi Kunnas and Jaakko Syrjä, which were both accomplished writers,[1] and this is thought to have had great influence on the brothers musical creativity.[1] He has also been awarded with Juha Vainio songwriter prize in 1997[1] and Reino Helismaa prize in 2004.[2][3] Syrjä has also participated significantly to Eppu Normaali's album covers.[1] He has planned the covers for Cocktail Bar, Tie vie, Rupisia riimejä karmeita tarinoita, Lyömättömät and Onko vielä pitkä matka jonnekin?, and took the photo on the cover of Sadan vuoden päästäkin.[4] He also did the artwork for his mother's children's book Puupuu ja käpypoika.[1]

Syrjä has been married twice, from which the second union he has triplets.[5][1] He was granted state artist's pension in March 2024.[6]
