The sentence:

Is grammatically incorrect, since you shouldn't use a comma to separate clauses. Also, - should be replaced with –. Accordingly, I request that the line be changed to:
Be careful when targeting a category rather than a mailing list; it may contain pages that should not be messaged – review the category contents first.
or
Be careful when targeting a category rather than a mailing list, since it may contain pages that should not be messaged – review the category contents first.
