Michael Ackon, also known as Kofi Global, is a Ghanaian youth advocate, climate activist and communications professional. His work focuses on youth leadership, climate action, advocacy, international development and social protection. He has worked with organizations including UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and has participated in youth and climate initiatives in Ghana and internationally.[1]
Ackon is also known as Kofi Global in his public advocacy and communications work. He has described himself as an advocate for youth, climate action, education and sustainable development in Africa.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Ackon was born and raised in Accra, Ghana.[1]
He grew up in a single-parent household with his mother, younger sister and grandmother. According to an account published by UNICEF Ghana, his family experienced significant financial difficulties, including challenges in securing stable housing and paying for his education.[1]
Ackon's education was partly supported through the Compassion International programme, which provided scholarships and school supplies during his teenage years and partially into his university education.[1]
He studied Public Relations Management and subsequently pursued studies in International Relations and Diplomacy.[2]
Career and advocacy
[edit]Ackon's professional interests developed around communications, public advocacy and international development. He has worked on public relations, digital communications, policy and programme coordination and youth engagement.[2]
He has described his interest in development work as being influenced by his own childhood experiences and his desire to help people facing socioeconomic disadvantage.[1]
Youth advocacy
[edit]Ackon has worked with youth-focused programmes and organizations promoting youth participation in policy-making and sustainable development.
He became a Youth Policy Influencer with the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) and has participated in initiatives designed to strengthen young people's involvement in public policy and community development.[2]
He has also served as a mentor with the Mastercard Foundation and has been involved in youth-development initiatives in Ghana.[2]
In 2024, Ackon was recognized among the Top 30 Most Influential Student Leaders by the Ghana Student Leadership Awards.[2]
Climate activism
[edit]Ackon has been involved in climate advocacy through the Youth Climate Council Ghana. His activities have included communicating climate issues to young people, promoting youth participation in climate policy and encouraging young people to take action on environmental challenges.[2]
He has written and spoken about the relationship between climate change, urban development and the vulnerability of communities in Ghana.
In July 2026, he published an article discussing the effects of flooding in Accra and the links between climate change, urban planning and community resilience.[3]
UNICEF
[edit]Ackon became involved with UNICEF Ghana through its youth engagement activities and later undertook an internship with the organization's Advocacy and Communication team.[1]
UNICEF Ghana published a profile of Ackon in June 2025 as part of its Parenting Month campaign. The profile described him as a young Ghanaian interested in communications, advocacy, social protection, policy formulation and implementation.[1]
During his internship with UNICEF Ghana, Ackon worked with the Advocacy and Communication team. He said that the experience strengthened his interest in development work, particularly UNICEF's work on social and child protection.[1]
He has also served as a U-Report Champion with UNICEF, participating in the U-Report programme that enables young people to express their views on issues affecting their communities and contribute to policy and development discussions.[2]
UNFPA Youth Leaders Fellowship
[edit]Ackon became a fellow of the United Nations Population Fund's Youth Leaders (YoLe) Fellowship. The fellowship exposed him to youth engagement in policy-making and programme implementation.[1]
As part of the fellowship, he participated in an internship exchange with UNICEF Ghana.[1]
He has identified youth participation in policy-making as an important component of his development work and advocacy.[1]
International and professional activities
[edit]Ackon has participated in international youth and development initiatives concerning climate action, diplomacy and sustainable development.
He has been involved with YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, through which young people participate in international climate-policy processes.[2]
He has also participated in international youth leadership programmes and events focused on African development, climate policy and international cooperation.[2]
In 2024, he received recognition as the Most Engaged Participant in Public Policy in the 50th cohort of the Young African Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership Center West Africa programme.[2]
Communications and media
[edit]Ackon's work includes public relations, digital communications and advocacy. He has contributed to youth-focused communications and written about climate, education, development and public policy.[2]
He has also participated in public speaking engagements concerning sustainable development and youth leadership. In 2024, he spoke at an International Youth Day event organized in Ghana, where he discussed the Sustainable Development Goals and encouraged young people to take action on development challenges.[4]
Public identity
[edit]Ackon uses the name Kofi Global in his public-facing advocacy and digital communications. Under this name, he publishes content about youth opportunities, climate action, education and sustainable development.[2]
His public advocacy combines communications with youth leadership and development work, particularly around opportunities for young Africans to participate in policy and community action.[2]
