editStripeys were thought to constitute a single species, M. strigatus, but a paper published in 2020[2] recognizes two valid species:
- Microcanthus strigatus (Cuvier, 1831) (northern stripey)
- Microcanthus joyceae Whitley, 1931 (East Australian stripey)
