Southern Syria

Dear editors,

I welcome a map of both Syria and Iraq. It clarifies the growing diversity in the Middle East wars. Still, as with the Syrian Civil War template map, I have some serious issues concerning concentrered pro-governement editing in southern Syria. Tasil and Jasim are shown as being contested, without sources presented for the past month or three to show that the Syrian Army had a presence inside both cities. In Qunaitra province, rebels have taken over the following villages in recent days:

  • Ayn al-Basha
  • Majduliyah
  • Naba al Sakher
  • Masharah and Tell Masharah
  • Mamtinah

Sources are to be found on SOHR, Twitter with YouTube evidence, some Israeli media and the fact that barrel bombs have been dropped in recent days on some of those villages.

I hope we can make a difference in this map, and show the true situation on the ground. I fear that some of the editors of the Syria Map are so pro-governement that they block towns being rebel held from being shown that way on the map. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.31.204.195 (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2014‎ (UTC)

This map is the wrong place to request that marks be added or changed. All marks come from Module:Syrian Civil War detailed map or from Module:Iraqi insurgency detailed map. Please ask for any changes on their talk pages. Jackmcbarn (talk) 14:17, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you to any and all who made this Syria-Iraq conflict map a reality Boredwhytekid (talk) 19:16, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Pixelated

The map is a bit pixelated, someone could fix it? --Joan301009 (talk) 18:28, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

I've submitted bugzilla:70529 about it. Jackmcbarn (talk) 19:12, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
@Joan301009: As a temporary workaround, you can add this line to Special:MyPage/common.js:
Now that it's fixed, don't do this anymore
$("img[src^='//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cc/Syria-Iraq_location_map.svg/']").removeAttr('srcset').attr('src', '//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/Syria-Iraq_location_map.svg');

@Joan301009: Fixed now. Jackmcbarn (talk) 22:37, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

What do the gray dots mean? And what do the squares of 4x4 dots mean? It doesn't say on the list at the bottom 99.42.97.16 (talk) 06:02, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Guest

Al Walid border crossing

ISIS just attacked on Al Walid border crossing on Iraqi side of border.Al Jazeera Hanibal911 (talk) 19:51, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

it says and i quote وتابعت أن مقاتلي التنظيم يحاصرون المعبر.,translation, and he continued, that the fighters of the organization are besieging the border cross.Alhanuty (talk) 20:29, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Alhanuty But source said about al Walid border crossing on Iraqi side border. But not said that ISIS also besieged Al Tanef border crossing. So let's leave the black circle only with Iraqi side. Hanibal911 (talk) 20:34, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

That is the problem with having a united border icon for Iraq and Syria.Alhanuty (talk) 20:39, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

@Alhanuty: If you want, you can move the border icons back into the individual country maps. Jackmcbarn (talk) 22:31, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
I solved this problem and move the border icons back into the individual country maps. Hanibal911 (talk) 19:55, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Yeah I think Al-Walid/Al-Tanf should be red and black animated 99.42.97.16 (talk) 20:14, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Lebanon

I think we should add Lebanon to this map. The Syrian Civil War has spilled over into Lebanon, most notably in Arsal. 99.42.97.16 (talk) 20:27, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

That may cause slight confusion, since yellow on the Lebanon map means Hezbollah/PFLP-GC, whereas yellow on the other maps means Kurdistan. If you want to do it anyway, though, you can by adding the Lebanon module to the secondaryModules list. Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:58, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
I can't find the map you're referring to, does it exist? As far as I can tell, ISIS controls no land in Lebanon, with it all being controlled by the Lebanese government.--John Smith the Gamer (talk) 15:34, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
See Template:Lebanese Insurgency detailed map and Module:Lebanese Insurgency detailed map. – Wbm1058 (talk) 15:52, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I'm working on it, but I'm making it a new module, unless we get a consensus otherwise (which I personally oppose). Creating a new SVG map as for the background, and I've never worked with SVG files before. --John Smith the Gamer (talk) 19:24, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
There's a glitch with upload wizard stopping me from providing a license, but I should manage somehow. Should now be working, although it has problems with border crossings: Template:Syrian,_Iraqi_and_Lebanon_Conflicts_detailed_map --John Smith the Gamer (talk) 21:09, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

sources

It seems like the information from this must come from a variety of sources. Are there a few main ones? What would I list as sources for this map if I were to cite it in a scholarly paper? Thanks! Nwolf1470 (talk) 18:36, 19 May 2015 (UTC)Nwolf1470

Hm... if you were being honest and listing every source you probably should list it as Wikipedia, or take up several pages listing every source. Sources include: www.dailystar.com, various twitter feeds including HKarimi1991, EjmAlrai, NowresR... and that'd be just a few from the last 10 days on the Iraqi (less active) module, according to edit summaries.
Hanibal911 Is a lot more knowledgeable about these things, as they do a lot of the editing to the module, perhaps they'll be willing to summarise the sources? Banak (talk) 20:19, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Color of Hezbollah-controlled areas in Lebanon

Syrian Civil War and regional spillover map

A related discussion is currently ongoing concerning the color of Hezbollah-controlled areas in Lebanon. It is argued whether the Lebanese government should be blue and Hezbollah red (like Syrian Ba'athist regime and its allies), or alternatively that Hezbollah should be blue but Lebanese Government as red (arguing that in each country the legitimate government is colored as red on the map). The problem of course arises at the combined regional map in case Lebanese government is colored red - making the Lebanese government and Syrian government forces the same color, while making Hezbollah - a staunch ally of Baathist Syria, into blue; also Hezbollah-controlled areas in Syria and Hezbollah-controlled areas in Lebanon show in different colors (Syria in red together with the Assad forces, but in Lebanon blue). Obviously it creates a complete incoherence with the combined regional war interactive map Template:Syrian, Iraqi and Lebanon Conflicts detailed map, and the regional spillover map which is based on it (right). Please discuss it at Lebanese Insurgency detailed map page.GreyShark (dibra) 18:56, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Hezbollah a separate color?

Considering Hezbollah is part of Lebanon government just as Right Sector is part of Ukraine government, it does not make sense to color Hezbollah with a separate color.

Map not updating

This map has not been updating for the past day, although the individual maps have been updating without trouble. Does anyone know why this is? Pbfreespace3 (talk) 20:19, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

@Pbfreespace3, try refreshing now, is it still not updated? Banak (talk) 20:37, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

@Banak, it is still not updating. Pbfreespace3 (talk) 20:46, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

@Pbfreespace3 Ok, so purging this module didn't work. Can you point to one thing that hasn't change don this map to see if it's just you? Banak (talk) 21:03, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

@Banak On the updated module, a town called "abu ghraib" is present immediately west of Baghdad, and there are some different village placements around Baghdad. There is also an added ISIS-held village southeast of Haditha that isn't showing up on the Syria and Iraq Template. Pbfreespace3 (talk) 21:08, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Pbfreespace3 Both places are the same for me, I imagine you're looking at a cached version.

@Banak I cleared the cache on my laptop, and it still appeared the same, so I used my tablet to view the page, and it is still outdated. I have not tried a different WiFi network, however. Would using a different network or unplugging my modem for a while help?

UPDATE: I have loaded the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Syrian,_Iraqi,_and_Lebanese_insurgencies_detailed_map and it shows as updated. However the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Syrian_and_Iraqi_insurgency_detailed_map does not show as updated. Pbfreespace3 (talk) 21:44, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

They are both working now. Pbfreespace3 (talk) 22:15, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Display problem with disputed icons

Hi, it's been days there's a problem of display on the "disputed-location" icons: black/yellow, black/red, red/green... etc. Can anyone try to resolve it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.69.187.199 (talkcontribs) 11:36, 3 August 2015

I can't see any problem with them, other than that I feel the animation is unnecessary. Banak (talk) 04:30, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Roads for Syria

I have made a background map with roads ( only for Syria) (Map with roads of Syria cause in the news. there is much about raods and highways . Somebody who manages this map, can please take this map into here in Wiki, and modify the template so that it uses this one as background map instead. The same thing happened here and works well! 212.75.52.4 (talk) 15:40, 4 November 2015 (UTC)MapMaker

IS still on Dyala-Salahuddin border?

It seems that the government wasn't able till now to clear the area of al-Adhaim and the mountain-chain of Hamrin: http://altaghier.tv/2015/12/15/مصادر-عسكرية-القوات-الأمنية-المشتركة

And I even doubt that the area is really clear. Maybe to put a black grid somewhere there to show IS presence. Mughira1395 (talk) 00:33, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Update: Maybe it is related to tehe aforementioned: Dozens of mortar-rounds fired on three villages just north of Muqdadiya (al-Bumusa, al-Asiyud, al-Lahaybat): http://altaghier.tv/2015/12/16/مجهولون-يمطرون-المقدادية-بعشرات-قذائ Mughira1395 (talk) 13:32, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Albu Dhiyab (north of Ramadi)

I know, that nobody is working here, but maybe somebody shows some mercy ;-)

According to this article, Abu Dhiyab is still to be liberated. So it had to be black before and now contested: http://altaghier.tv/2015/12/20/قائد-عمليات-محافظة-الانبار-يعلن-بدء-تح It says that the commander of Anbar liberation operation commander, Brigadier-General Ismail al-Mahlawi announced the beginn of operations to liberate Albu Dhiyab, and that advance is going fast and without resistance. Syrian Roads

What happened to the syrian part of the map? The roads are awful! Could someone change it back to the iraqi model?

They are working on this issue. ----212.75.52.4 (talk) 08:43, 22 January 2016 (UTC)MapMaker

Template:Syrian and Iraqi insurgency detailed map

Template:Syrian and Iraqi insurgency detailed map links to eight DAB pages, as shown in this report by one of User:JaGa's tools. As a consequence, User:DPL bot is reporting multiple errors - and of course readers are getting unhelpful (and possibly wrong) information. (For example: there seems to be no Wiki article about any place in Iraq or Syria called Ewes.) Could someone who knows their way around the template help fix the problem?

Map no longer functional

What happened to this map? It used to be good for tracking cross-border activities between Syria and Iraq. Now it comes out blank. - 175.144.28.30 (talk) 07:49, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

It doesn't work for me, either. Many people were using this on social media for displaying current progress against ISIS. GBRV (talk) 15:40, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
Isn't anyone attending to this map any longer? What happened? GBRV (talk) 17:41, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
Could be a change of code and neglect. You might want to raise that with the Template:Syrian Civil War detailed map since it has the most activity at the moment. It's also dismaying that Template:Iraqi insurgency detailed map doesn't have road maps like this module did. - 210.187.198.211 (talk) 19:50, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
