editThe nominate subspecies, T. d. deningeri was first described in 1912 by German ornithologist Erwin Stresemann.[2] Following a 2023 study of the phylogenics of Island thrush subspecies, the Island thrush was split into 17 different species by the IOC and Clements checklist.[3][4][5]
It currently has two recognized subspecies:[2]
