NHL 27 is an upcoming ice hockey simulation video game developed by EA Vancouver and published by EA Sports. It is the 36th installment in the NHL video game series and is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 11, 2026.[1][2]

Gameplay

[edit]

NHL 27 introduces a number of changes to the series' gameplay and presentation. The game uses NHL EDGE tracking data and introduces 32 unique team playbooks designed to give each NHL team a more distinct style of play. The playbooks cover areas such as breakouts, special teams and late-game strategy.[3]

The game also features redesigned atmospheres for all 32 NHL arenas. Team-specific elements include goal songs, chants, lighting, jumbotrons and crowd reactions. A new broadcast package includes updated graphics, camera work and presentation elements.[3]

A new commentary team consists of ESPN play-by-play announcer John Buccigross and former NHL goaltender Darren Pang.[4]

Connected Franchise

[edit]

NHL 27 introduces Connected Franchise, an online league mode allowing players to create and manage leagues with up to 32 human-controlled teams. Players can customize league rules and schedules, manage rosters, make trades and participate in free agency. Commissioners are provided with additional management tools to oversee their leagues.[5]

Hockey Ultimate Team

[edit]

Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) returns in NHL 27 with authentic NHL coaches and team playbooks. Coaches provide additional strategic options through line-combination connections based on their real-world coaching histories.[1]

Presentation

[edit]

NHL 27 introduces Cohesive AI, improving coordinated five-player behavior for teammates and opponents. Contextual Strategy Shifts allow AI teams to adapt their tactics based on the score, time and game situation. Defensive gameplay has been refined with improved poke checks, stick lifts and interceptions. Goalie intelligence and fatigue have also been expanded. The Orchestrator dynamically adjusts broadcasts, replays, crowd reactions and arena presentation based on game context. Crowd reactions are more dynamic, with fans responding to goals, penalties and game situations through team-specific chants, songs and jumbotron animations.[6]

Development and release

[edit]

NHL 27 was officially unveiled by Electronic Arts on July 16, 2026.[7] San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini was announced as the cover athlete for both the Standard and Deluxe Editions.[2][8]

The game is scheduled to release worldwide on September 11, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Players who purchase the Deluxe Edition receive seven days of early access beginning September 4. EA Play members can also access a 10-hour trial beginning September 4.[4][9]
