Nintendo Music is an audio streaming service developed by Nintendo. It is exclusively for users subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online, an online subscription service for the Nintendo Switch video game console.[2] The platform was released in select countries on October 30, 2024.

Features

As of launch, the service incorporates affiliated franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong.[3] Users can select music to stream to their device on-demand, or listen to existing playlists. In addition, the application allows unique affordances such as extending track playback to 15, 30, or 60 minutes, downloading tracks for offline listening, creation of custom playlists, and background listening.[4] Nintendo Music provides three type of audio quality, first is data saving which is approximately 64kbps, second is balanced which is approximately 192kbps and third is high quality which is approximately 320kbps.[5] The application also includes a feature that allows users to remove tracks that may spoil games that they have not finished.[6]

Announcement and release

Nintendo announced the application on October 30, 2024, and announced that it would be launching later that day. Nintendo also said that music from more games would be added over time.[7]Users can stream a variety of video game music, largely soundtracks, from licensed Nintendo titles. Announced on October 30, 2024, the app was released the same day in Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, including European, some South American and some North American countries for Android and iOS. Additional countries are expected to follow.[1]

23 soundtracks from various games and consoles were made available at launch. As of October 31, 2024, there are 25 soundtracks available and at least seven forthcoming.[8]

Reception

Kyle Barr of Gizmodo called the application "surprisingly good" but criticized the small selection of music available at launch.[11] Fans, journalists, and developers criticized the app for not crediting the soundtrack composers.[12][13] Abner Li from 9to5Google noted many similarities to the YouTube Music streaming service.[14]
