9M729-Oreshnik (Russian: Орешник; lit.'the Hazel')[2] is a Russian hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), first announced by Russian president Vladimir Putin during a speech on 21 November 2024. The missile is claimed to have a speed of Mach 10 (12,300 km/h; 7,610 mph; 3.40 km/s), which would make it difficult to intercept.[3]

Operational use

According to Russia, on 21 November 2024 the Oreshnik was first used in combat in an attack on the PA Pivdenmash facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro during the Russo-Ukrainian War.[4] The missile reportedly uses an MIRV payload, which was shown in unverified footage of the attack.[3] The strike occurred after a long-range missile attack by Ukraine in Russia which in turn occurred after the United States, United Kingdom and France — each a NATO member state — granted Ukrainian forces permission to strike targets in Russia using Western-supplied long-range missiles — ATACMS and Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG.[5][6]

US officials note that the missile is still experimental and Russia only has a few in its possession, and that it is unlikely to be regularly deployed against Ukraine.[3]
