Biography

edit

Phùng Khánh Linh was born in 1994 in Bắc Giang, into a family where no one pursued the arts. She studied at Bắc Giang High School for the Gifted [vi],[2] then graduated with a degree in Law from Trade Union University [vi].[3] She became interested in music at the age of 3. Because her father forbade her to become a singer, she only sang on school stages and at the Pioneers Palace.[4]

Career

edit

2015–2018: Participated in The Voice of Vietnam season 3, became famous for "Hôm nay tôi buồn"

edit

She became known after participating in the third season of The Voice of Vietnam and was chosen by all four coaches.[3] She was eliminated during Live show 7 of the competition.[5]

Her first composition is the song "One side love", written in early 2017 about a cute budding love story. This was released but did not make much of an impression.[4] She released the single "Hôm nay tôi buồn" in early 2018. With this song, Phùng Khánh Linh received nominations at big music awards, including Song of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the 2019 Dedication Music Award.[6] Linh joined Times Records on February 29, 2020[7] and joined Universal Music Vietnam 5 months later.[8]

2020–present: The two albums Yesteryear and Citopia

edit

On December 3, 2020, she released her debut album Yesteryear with 13 self-composed songs to the public.[9] This album is considered a breakthrough of V-pop in the early 2020s.[10] 1,000 physical albums were sold after 2 weeks, this is a large number in the Vietnamese market.[11] Previously, the promotional showcase for the album Yesteryear was also completely sold out after only a few days on sale.[12] At the 2021 Dedication Music Awards, Linh received 2 nominations in the categories Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.[13] She was also nominated for the 2021 Yellow Mai Award for the Light Music Singer category.[14]

On November 11, 2022, she released her second studio album Citopia with 10 self-composed songs in the Japanese city pop style. The album was highly appreciated by The Japan Times.[15] At the 2023 Dedication Music Awards, Phùng Khánh Linh received 3 nominations in the categories Female Singer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Album of the Year.[16]
