History

edit

The idea of popularizing philosophy through a magazine was conceived in 2003 by Fabrice Gerschel, a graduate of HEC Paris and a passionate enthusiast of the discipline. Gerschel was part of a "trend" that was predicted to be short-lived. This trend led to the creation of several philosophical productions (such as the founding of the Café des Phares in 1992, the French publication in 1995 of the philosophical bestseller Sophie's World, and the creation of the Les goûters philo collection in 2001), which adapted philosophical discourse to various formats.[2]

After spending ten years in investment banking, Gerschel invested in Philo Éditions, which published this independent magazine in April 2006, initially on a bimonthly basis during its first year. The magazine, which claims independence from any particular school of thought, set itself the mission to "make philosophy accessible to a curious and cultured but non-specialist audience" and to "offer a philosophical perspective on the contemporary world in its many dimensions (politics, society, science, arts…).”[3] The first four issues exceeded 50,000 copies, with average sales reaching 49,000 per issue, including 7,000 subscribers.

In February 2007, the magazine became a monthly publication, releasing an issue of around 100 pages written by about fifty contributors each month. At that time, around a dozen people were working for the magazine.[4]

Profitable since the second half of 2009, the magazine diversified its activities in 2010 by offering corporate training programs.[2]

Available by subscription or at newsstands, the magazine realized, given the editorial workload and number of contributors, that survival required expansion. It became available in 12,000 outlets across Europe, Germany, and Canada.

In April 2010, the magazine won the Syndicat de la presse magazine et d'information's "Magazine of the Year" award, as well as the award for best magazine in the "Culture and Discoveries" category.[5] It also won in 2924.[6]

In April 2023, Philosophie Magazine and Sciences Humaines announced their merger, with the new entity being majority-owned by Fabrice Gerschel. Regarding its online presence, Philosophie Magazine claimed 15,000 digital subscribers, with its web team having been strengthened in 2020.[7][8]
