Premise

Set in 1990s New York and inspired by true events, a working-class undercover officer is tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets.[1]

The film marks the feature length directorial debut for Carmen Emmi, who also scripted the film. It is produced by Arthur Landon, Colby Cote and Eric Podwall for Page 1 Entertainment and Lorton Entertainment.[2]

Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth were confirmed in the lead roles in March 2024.[3] That month, Amy Forsyth and Christian Cooke also joined the cast,[4] as well as Maria Dizzia, John Bedford Lloyd and Gabe Fazio.[5]

Filming got underway in Syracuse, New York in March 2024.[6][7] First-look images from the set were released that month.[8]

Plainclothes is set to premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.[9]
